***MrsZiz/MrsPresley***and CD mamas using PFs/Thirsties

Hi ladies,

We started CDing Libby last Sunday.  So far so good except the white elastic on the leg gussets of the thirsties covers are getting poo stained.  YUCK!  It's just on the inside, but still.  So...

1) Have you experienced this?

2) If so, are you able to remove it?

FWIW, we are using the jelly roll fold with a snappi...so no leaks or anything (Yay) but sometimes the elastic of the leg gusset must get up under the PF or something.  I know that line drying in the sun can "bleach" out stains...but with our rain and snow...it'll be a while before I can do that.  I don't want to use bleach as it will breakdown the cover and its elastic.

Any tips?

Also, I noticed Libby's bum is red and I am not sure if it's the start of a diaper rash or not.  I noticed it today.  Could be from switching from sposies to CDs or maybe from my milk being fully in now and she's going potty a lot...or ???  We've washed the CDs with cold rinses, hot wash/rinse, cold rinse using 7th Generation Delicate (recommended or high efficiency machines by pinstripesandpolkadots.com).  We've washed them twice now (in addition to prepping them).  I hope her little bum heals up soon.

hi!  i have been MIA for awhile (how do working mommies have time for the internet?!) ;) but i use PF with thirsties and bummis covers, and had the same problem when Ellery was a newborn.  as they get older, it's not as bad because they don't poo as often--while i do have the sun to bleach them out, i tried to gauge when she might poo (it became every 3 days) then wouldn't use a PF, instead use an AIO.  obviously that's not always predictable, so i just ended up using more covers, buying a few extra so i had 8 total.  do you have any sun?  it doesn't take long (about 20 min) to sunbleach the stains out.  also, have you tried the angel wing fold?  hth!

Thanks!  I am loving your siggy pic of Ellery!  Too cute.

I will try sun bleaching as soon as we get some...it's been raining/snowing here since Christmas!  ugh.  And we don't get snow. Supposedly.

  • the sun works wonders! but actually it's just the UV, not the actually sunshine that you see.... I haven't tried it out but i have heard that you can set your diapers out on a cloudy day and it will still get the stains out.  I even read on DS that some mamas will put the diapers on the dash of their car or inside the house near a window on cloudy days and it will sun the stains out :)

that said, we went for weeks w/o getting any stains on the inner elastic on A's covers and i wondered why i got so many covers....then as soon as i thought that to myself, she started getting poop on some of them. go figure :) it's still pretty rare but it does happen...i'd say about once a week.  usually it is b/c the PF isn't on tight enough, so just work on really pulling on it before you snappi it to get a better fit with your PFs.  sometimes it's inevitable though w/the explosive EBF poos.

as for the possible diaper rash, hard to say w/o seeing it...could be lots of things...poo is really irritating to the skin so it could simply be from a poopy diaper being on her bum for too long. or could be irritation from the detergent in the diapers...have you checked your washer to make sure you don't see bubbles after they're washed? or it could be the opposite problem where you aren't using enough detergent, too.

ETA: also wanted to let you know that while we do sometimes get some explosive poo on the inside of the gusset, we have not had a single blow out with our CDs! :)

  • Thanks ladies...the diaper rash is gone so I suspect it was actually caused by the sposie dipes and wipes and not our CDs.  Yay.  Jaime, thanks for the tip on making sure the PF is tight....we can probably do better with that.  No blow-outs AND I love the fact that you can "check" for a wet/dirty CD by just slipping a finger under the leg gusset and test to see if the PF is wet/warm without having to open the entire diper OR pulling the back of the diaper out to see (like folks do with a sposie).  So convenient!
  • yeah, the PFs always seem to loosen a bit in the snappi-ing process so get them super tight to where you think it's too tight and then by the time it's snappi-ed in it will be just right :)

oh yeah, and A got a diaper rash from the disposable wipes that we used on our trip to TN! so that could well be the issue.

  • I'm a little late on this, sorry! Anyhow, we do sometimes get poo on the leg gussets. While it's not the most eye pleasing, we've only ever had ONE poop blowout, so the covers do the trick. You can soak them in oxyclean and water and then wash them and usually most of it comes out. I wouldn't bleach them because it can wear out the gusset faster.

I've noticied that we won't be able to use the covers for a second baby (at least not for our first line of covers, maybe as backups) because we only bought 3 covers so the leg gussets and the velcro is kind of worn. It still works but it's just not as good as it was when it was new.
