Hello from Rhode Island!

Hi everyone,

I am Jennifer, I'm from the RI Knot boards (haven't ventured to the RI Nest since our 10/09 wedding).  My husband's job is looking to move him to the DFW area, or to San Antonio.  I am not familiar with either.  I want to start researching jobs for me.  I am looking for biotech or pharmaceutical companies.  Does anyone know of any in the area?  Right now I work for Bayer (the aspirin!) and I've been here for 8 years, so this would be a big change for me.  Any help, advice, or direction would really be appreciated!!  I realize I'm posting above a similar post but I know I can always count on these communities.

Thank you!

Re: Hello from Rhode Island!

  • Hi and welcome.

Where will your husband be working? Dallas or Fort Worth...  they are very different.  :)  As far as proximity.

As for pharma companies, I am NO help but can help out with the FW side of things.  :)

  • Hi and thanks!

Fort Worth.  Sorry, I didn't realize they were so far apart.  The airport there makes it sound like they're right next to each other.  :-)  But, our airport is supposedly in Providence, when it's really ~30 minutes away from Prov....

How about Lewisville?  Or Lewiston?  How far is that?

  • Lewisville to FW is quite a commute.  Around an hour each way.  I have never heard of Lewiston ( I just moved here).  Didn't Seimens buy Bayer a few yrs back?  If so there is a Seimens office Just outside Lewisville in the Plano/Frisco area.

  • Ooh!  Really??  The Bayer where I am got bought by Siemens too - I still say Bayer though.  Partly out of habit, partly so people identify the company as a biotech company, and partly b/c I don't like saying Siemens.  That is awesome, I will look into that.  It's not linked to my facility - we're only up here, in PA, NJ, and CA.  I didn't even think to look up other Siemens facilities. That sure would be a nice transition.

The town I was thinking of must be Lewisville, not Lewiston.  I couldn't remember.  Right now, my commute takes an hour and 15 minutes up to two hours, so only an hour would be great!  Obviously, less would be even better.

    Thank you for your help!

  • You are welcome.  Lewisville is a nice area to live.  I don't live too far from there.  There are a lot of upper middle class Asian imigrants there.  Just letting you know.  I don't mean anything by that statement.  I lived in S. Korea for a year so I like to go there to get my Korean food fix.  Their grocery stores look just like the ones in Korea.  It's amazing.  But I digress...

  • I know there is a Mercer office in Dallas, because it's in the same building I work in.  :-)  I'm not sure if they are hiring or whatnot, so you'd have to check into that.  We're actually moving to Lewisville, and it'll be about a 30 minute drive each way.

  • If you're looking for a site to search for houses, cbdfw.com is an awesome search engine. Is there something you saw that pulls you towards Lewisville in particular? There's so many great areas in the metroplex that electing to commute to Ft.Worth from there seems unnecessary.

I have family that works for Astra-Zeneca and their office is in Las Colinas just east of the airport

  • There is a large Alcon presence in South Fort Worth.  You can check for jobs on their website.
