Child Care Search...Too good not to post! (LONG)

So, long story short, I've been looking for new child care for Brynne. I'm getting a little discouraged, but only because of some of the ridiculous things I've seen/heard!  I had to share.......

1. On Tuesday I spoke with a woman who told me that she lives in a trailer and she can't go anywhere because her car is broken. She said, if she can get a ride, sometimes she takes the kids with her to her WIC appointments. While giving me directions to her trailer park (I didn't ask for them), she told me that her trailer is the one with all the duct tape on the corners. While I was speaking with her, she proceeded to yell at one of the children and told them to be quiet because she was, "talking to someone about getting another baby in here". I don't think so!!!

2. Yesterday I visited a childcare center in Lemoyne. It was small and looked kinda run down. The director was missing her two bottom teeth. I just can't send my daughter to someone who is toothless. I just can't do it!

3. Last night I visited another woman who cares for children in her home. (Yes, I visited two yesterday). While the woman was soooooo nice, she had a dog that wouldn't stop barking at Brynne. It made her cry! They must have really been into hunting, because the living room was filled with allll kinds of animal heads. Awesome. (And nothing against hunting, etc....my Dad has his own collection of animal whatevers that my Step Mom makes him keep in the basement!)

4. I just got off the phone with a woman who has "A degree in Childhood Development". She told me that her house looks horrible and that the ceiling of her apartment is falling in and paint is chipping off the walls. She blamed this on her land lord, but also admitted that she often fails to pay her rent on time. Thankfully, she let me know that she loves babies and would spoil my daughter. I felt soooooo relieved.

I know I'll find someone/somewhere wonderful soon, but BOY, are there some crazies out there! I just had to share!

Re: Child Care Search...Too good not to post! (LONG)

  • OMG!  What a nightmare!  I'm so sorry you have to look for childcare again.  I can't believe the crazies you are coming across!  The one that is yelling at another child while you are on the phone seems to take the cake, and taking the kids she watches to her WIC appointments?!?  Whoa!.  I hope the poor children in her care are okay.

  • I think I was behind the lady from #1 last night at Giant.

I wonder if they feed the kids pixy sticks at #2 to achieve the toothless look.

Did the lady in #3 apologize for the dog?

Is number #4 warning you of potential asbestos hazards from the ceiling and lead based paint from the walls?  She is going to spoil them with lead and asbestos filled love.

The scary thing is that apparently some parents use these wackos.

  • Wow, I'm sorry you are having a hard time.  One would think that you were looking in Perry County for a sitter.  Stick out tongue

I hope you find someone good soon!!!

  • Oh, I forgot, dh's co-worker's girlfriend works at a center in New cumberland somewhere, do you want me to ask her about it??
  • This just absolutely makes me want to cry.  We were so fortunate to have found a wonderful mother of twin 2 year old girls to watch Caleb.  I found her on craigslist of all places.  Caleb loves going there, loves hanging out will Wil-wo (Willow) and her twin sister Wil-wo (aka Zoe, but he can't say this so he just calls her Willow too even though he knows the difference between them), and I really feel like he is learning so much going there.

Now that DH has lost his job meaning we may be relocating I'm having to think about going through the process of finding another daycare for Caleb.  It is absolutely heart-wrenching going through that process.  I really feel for you, and am sorry that you are having to go through this.  I'd recommend my sitter if she weren't 3000 miles away.

  • I was wondering how your search was going.  I'm so sorry that you're having to look for childcare again and having to waste your time on the ones above.  I agree with Jill, #1 takes the cake!  I hope you find someone soon!

    And LOL at Denise's response!

  • Oh. my. god.

Good luck Emily!  I hope you're able to find someone soon.

  • Thanks for your support ladies! I'm fortunate to have family and friends willing to help out in the meantime, so I'm actually doing pretty well.

I definitley feel bad for the children already in their care, and my guess is that their parents probably live in the same trailer park.

Brandy, I would love to hear about the facility that your friend works at. I do have my hopes up about a center not far from my house. There are plenty of little trashy places in my area, but I have haerd good things about the Learning and Sharing Center in New Cumberland. There is a waiting list, but it's better than the trailer lady!

I'll be sure to keep you updated! Thanks again for your support!

  • Holy crap!!!!  I have no words...the trailer lady story is crazy!  I sure hope something works out soon.  Let me know if you need any help...I'm home with Keaton most of the week and we do live real close to each other so, I would be happy to watch her.
  • Aw! Thank you so much Lesli! Right now my sister and MIL have been watching her. My sister just moved back from Florida and is going through the process to begin substitute teaching. I'm good until they call her! I don't want our childcare issues to effect her career.

If I'm stuck, I just might give you a ring! Thank you very much!

  • Oh my --- thoses stories ard crazy!!!!! Scary!!!

This makes me happy that my parents are retired and will be our childcare.

Hopefully you find a reliable sitter soon!!

  • Oh my...

Anyway, We had Addy at Capital Area Children's Center in Camp Hill (by the Healthy Grocer).  They have a wonderful program and I didn't want Addy anywhere else after visting.  If you want more info, let me know.  GL!

  • wow...just...wow!!!!
  • Thanks, Dawn! I will definitely check out Addy's old center. How are things going in Pittsburgh?
  • Pittsburgh is going well, thanks for asking.  We are settled in and my job has gotten a lot better (it was rough at first), I just wish my commute wasn't so long - 45 minutes and 40 miles!  Addy is doing well...getting big and moving into the terrible 2s!!  She wants to do everything herself!!  We found her a daycare and started her 2 days a week unti Mark finds a job.  Mark was content to stay home for awhile, but is ready to find a job recently.  Hopefully, he will find something quickly...I guess we'll see.  We do love being 5 minutes from my parents...it's been great being home!!!

Miss you all...glad I can still keep in touch through here and FB!
