a gross poll. hair related.

how hard this is to pose as a question without sounding too gross...

when you're in the shower, what do you do with your hair when it falls loose from your head? do you let it go down the drain and clean it up afterwards, or do you deal with it as it comes off your head?

i have an aversion to the way loose hair feels if it is on my legs or back, so i try and grab as much loose hair as i can as i get through the whole showering process before it even has a chance to hit the drain. i never let it get to the drain, and i might have one or two strands a week that i have to clear from the drain.

i throw the hair out into the trash as i take it from my head.  i lose a lot of hair.

Re: a gross poll. hair related.

  • i lose a lot of hair.

Um, yeah, you do. I've never had this problem - I might have one or two stray hairs a week, and I just let them go down the drain.

  • It usually comes out in my hand while I'm washing my hair, and then I stick it to the shower wall. when I get out I grab the wall hair and put into my trash. I do not have a trash can in my shower.

I still have to clean my drain often.

  • Obviously this doesn't happen to me daily; I only get my hair wet once a week. Once I'm done, I just rinse what's stuck to me off and pull the whole wad out of the drain. Then I flush it. It's always only my hair; DH & I don't share a bathroom.

    ..
  • I lose handfuls of hair at a time. I let it hit the drain (we keep a hair trap on the drain) and then empty and clean the hair trap each time we shower. FI loses a lot of hair too, but not as much as me.

  • I lose tons of hair. Way too much to grab as it's coming lose. Anything that sticks to my hands after shampooing or conditioning gets thrown out, but I don't try to catch it otherwise.

I used to have a trap over the drain to catch the hair before it went down, but they don't always fit right and end up being messier than they're worth. I have to Draino the shower every 6 months or so.

  • when i get a haircut, i lose a lot less. but i still lose tons of hair in the shower. maybe it's because i leave it up all day, who knows.

CW, i actually do the same thing. it's weird, and DH gets mad if i accidentally forget it there (which happens once in a blue moon - sorry DH!), but i can't stand to let it just fall to the drain.

  • I keep a hair trap on the drain in my bathroom, so I just clean it out.  I did the stick it to the wall thing when I lived in my apartment.

  • I grab all the hair I can out of my hands and place it on top of the ceramic soap dish, then toss it. I refer to them as "my kittens".

I used to lose a TON of hair, but since I've been getting more protein in my diet, that has stopped. Of course I gained weight too, but at least my hair isn't falling out.

I do this too. I still have to clean out the drain but a little drain-o every few months is no big deal.

  • i think i have an unrealistic fear of the bathwater getting backed up because of my hair, so i want to avoid the problem before i need to buy draino.

but i wondered what other people do with my hair when i was taking a shower this morning and i wondered how weird i was for grabbing as much loose hair as possible to ball up and toss out.

  • Zilla - I brush my hair before I get in the shower, so most of the loose hair ends up in the brush (where it is easier to manage and not as gross because it isn't wet). Once I am in the shower, anything else that falls out, goes down the drain.

  • i thought of doing that also, Min - but there's a little bit of a twisted side to me that actually likes seeing how much hair i lose in a washing. i don't think i am keeping a mental track, but i do notice if it is more or less than what i usually see.

maybe it's one of my quirks, like touching my eye to the point of OCD.

  • I'm shocked I even have hair on my head. I have to clean up from around me after blowdrying and straightening my hair also.

Huh. I, too, eat a lot of protein.

I would never have figured this to be an actual problem for so many people. I must be a freak - but at least now I understand why there was always so much discarded hair in the dorm showers in college.

  • bmom, do you have short or long hair? i tend to thnk this is also an issue with someone with long hair, longer than shoulder-length.

also, i think it's my hair type, that i have pretty fine hair.

  • My hair sheds a lot. It's not as bad as when I blow dry it, but I'm always using the dustbuster in the bathroom picking up hair.
    image
  • I also twist my hair, so I pull it out and break it throughout the day. I am rought on my hair. I am the reason I don't have better hair.
    image
  • You notice stray hairs more once it's longer, I didn't ever notice hair in the drain until after my hair was chin-length.  I let the drain catch it, then remove it.  We haven't had problems with clogged drains, and I still check once in a great while.

I do this exactly, except I haven't yet had to clean the drain in the new house. I used to let it go down the drain, but then in the old house (with our 1937 plumbing), it became a problem. So now we have wall hair.

As an aside, pregnancy was awesome. I'd lose maybe 10 hairs a week.  (perhaps why I've never had to clean the drain, since I've been pregnant for all but about 6 months here.) Now I'm in postpartum hair loss mode and am getting clumps in every shower and every time I comb my hair.  It gives me teh sad.

  • wow. i was so embarassed to think i was the only freak who sticks the loose hair to the shower wall. i am glad i am not alone.

i try to throw it out during the shower, but that makes me leave water all over the bathroom.

  • I do the CW trick. I'm annoyed DG, my hair on my head is still falling out like normal. But I swear I'm growing sideburns and my belly looks like I'm the Sasquatch's sister. It's revolting.
