Need AdviSe

I wrote this on weekends plans and then realized it got long. Sooo I need adviSe. What say WW/MN?

At some point, I need to do some general cleaning. Probably do some things to get the house ready to meet with a realtor next week.

The house we live in is small (for the hopefully expanding family), but is on 4 acres with no neighbors. (It is fine for just us.) Which is nice. H met with the realtor today about the place that is on 40 acres.

We are trying to decide if we:

A: Want to sell both and move closer to the town/city. Putting all the money for both on the new place. Cutting down on commute/gas.

B: If house with 4 acre place sells first, we may move to 40 acre.

C: If 40 acre sells first, stay at 4 acre place. (4 acre place is paid off. Still have loan on the 40 acre place.)

D. Even though house at 4 acres is paid off, we would need to build another house on the lot eventually and do what I don't know with the old house.

My drive to work is 1 hour now and would be 45 minutes from the other place.

We're cornfuzzled and not sure what we want to do just yet. WWWW/MND?

.

Re: Need AdviSe

  • not knowing the details, I would definitely go for a short commute. Every minute is precious, even wihtout kids.  Add kids to the mix, and you will REALLY want those 2 hours back every day.

OTOH, I know my H would die if he had to live in the city. He wants land. He'd be willing to commute 90 minutes each way if it meant he could have acreage.

Thus our compromise.  Instead of a loft in the city (my fantasy) or 20 acres (his fantasy), we have almost 2 acres in a reasonably close-to-the-city suburb.  It's working out really well.  If you have that kind of option, I recommend it.

  • Wow. 40 acres is a lot of land. What do you do with it all?

If you love the property of either place, I'd keep that and build the house you want on it. If you're not in love with the property then sell both and move to the city/town.

The commute would be enough to get me to move, but for some people the bigger house/more land is a fair trade.

  • That's what i'm thinking, DG. re: the kids and commute time. I know I miss out on a lot already due to time constraints.

Your compromise sounds similar to ours, but it's that we own acreage already. I've lived out of town and in town. I don't mind either. H, on the other hand, loves living in the middle of BFE and would just assume have more acreage than house.

He's also super attatched to the house we are in, because it was his first house purchase. This is one of the emotional reasons for it.

I should add that the 40 acres place was in his side of the family, but we purchased it from them. (They owned it for 10years, there's no reason we can't sell it. Won't create a problem, etc.)

I would just assume living just outside of town in a new/newer home. We are trying to come to a decision that accomodates what we both want for our family, ya know?

  • Commute, commute, commute! That's why we picked our house; smaller and closer to the city makes tons more sense. My SIL lives out in the hinterlands in some stupidly large house. NO ONE EVER GOES TO HER HOUSE. It's too damn far.

Garden (nothing like fresh veggies!), the guys hunt, etc. I really don't go that much to that place in particular.

Actually , the guys don't hunt there that much. Mostly because IL's have an 80 acre place about 9 miles south of our house. (30 minutes from their house on 10 acres.) My parents place is about 30 minutes to the right and they have close to 300 acres. H has a lease place that is 280+? acres down the road from there. Our 40 acre place is 20+ minutes to the left of us.

**I'm not boasting by any means that's why I didn't put it at first. I'm just saying that we are close to our families and have plenty of other places to go to if we decide to sell/move/whatever. We can go 1 of 4 ways and have land.

    I just hate driving.

  • I married H knowing that he loves living there. However, I feel like we can find somewhere close to town that still has privacy.

Andplusalso, it was a big step for him to call a realtor in the first place. I didn't even say anything to him about it. He just did it. yay

I think he just knows that if he wants a bajillion kids we have to do something. <----I am not a Duggar and will not be poppin them out like that though.

  • Commute. As someone who worked from home and thought commute was no big deal, it is. It BLEW having to drive 45 minutes to a hour and a half to get to the airport a few times a week. I love where we live now, although my only complaint is that we are a bit far from my parents (it's about 45 minutes). We're close to both our jobs, and close to things like shopping/dining/hobbies/doctors. It takes DH and I about 20 minutes to get to our jobs. I love knowing that I will be home and not requiring a tranquilizer dart to deal with road rage.
