Budgetzilla Mamas - Yay for CDs

We started Libby on CDs last Sunday...we have 36 infant sized ones and 4 Thirsties covers and 3 Snappis.  Thank goodness we've decided to CD.  Since my milk has come in we're going through 12-18 diapers a day.  We're also using as many cloth wipes.  I am SO glad we're not buying sposies!  At this rate we'd be spending some good money to keep her in diapers!   For the cost of the initial start up with CDs (we spent about $250) and a few loads of laundry/week, we're SO set.  Also, Libby loves them...she was crying when we were using sposie wipes and dipes and now, in cloth, she's a happy little being.

  • 12-18?  Yikes.  I only have 24 PFs.  Maybe I better buy more!

Which wipes did you get?  I just got wash cloths b/c that's what Sarah said she did and it works for them.  Guess I'll see how it goes...

This was my first thought...Jaime went through a lot too, so now I'm hoping and praying that we don't! Although we'll be using disposables for the first 6 weeks or so, so I guess we'll have a chance to find out if we need to buy more!

  • yay! glad you are liking them. yeah, once i saw how many diapers we were going through i was so glad we made the choice to CD. i also like the cloth wipes too - they came in really handy when she got RSV and we had to suction her nose all the time too ;)

Christine - around 6-8 weeks was when A started going through fewer diapers per day.  so depending on what size PFs you have (we have GMDs which are sized a bit differently from standard PFs), you can either do laundry more often or get another dozen PFs to get you through those first few weeks.  if you are going to be off from work the whole time (and will have a little help around)...honestly the extra laundry isn't too bad, but it is nice to have the extra dozen.  (we have 36 orange edge (nb size) and 24 of all the bigger size PFs.).  as for wipes you can use whatever. wash cloths are great. if you have an excess of flannel receiving blankets, you can cut those up and use them too.  i got a set of flannel wipes (here) w/ a set of PFs that i purchased from someone else but definitely no need to get anything special to use.

  • Thanks, Jaime.  I guess we'll just see how it goes.  I have some AIOs also that I can use as back up or for overnight with a doubler.  I think it's just a trial and error thing with CDing, huh?

yeah if you have some extra diapers, doesn't matter what they are...you should be fine :) you won't need any special diapers or doublers for overnight in the beginning though...you'll be getting up every couple hrs just like during the day to nurse and change diapers ;)

  • CDing is so wonderful. I haven't converted yet, but have started my research and would like to very soon. A little late in the game, but that's ok. It'll give me some practice and hopefully our next baby will be CD'd from the beginning. Hearing all the good things about cloth diapering on this board has been very motivating!
  • I got some wipes from Etsy seller Wooldin. They are bamboo and flannel and can be used as doublers in the diapers too.  We roll them like cigars and wet them and stick them in our Lionheart Wipes Warmer so Libby gets the full on spa treatment with each diaper change...LOL!

  • I'm glad you are loving CDing! We too love it! It's saved us TONS of money. We just bought the red edge GMD prefolds and got them as "Seconds" off of their site. I would not consider them seconds at all! They are not cut completely perfect but they are darn close. We ended up with 32 of them (they came in sets of 10 and we bought 2 and then we bought 1 set of regular ones). We just bought 4 medium covers, the girl is growing! I would highly suggest looking at GMD site for the seconds to buy the next sizes up if you like them!

The nice thing about prefolds is that you can use them for a ton of things, changing pad at home or on a changing table, burp rags, my mom now using my old prefolds as cleaning rags! The wipes we use for everything too, like Jaime said, when Bella had a really nasty nose we would use one for her boogers.

Definitely. The wipes we have are 7" squares so before I wipe her bum I'll go over her neck folds and pits with one side and then flip it over and clean her tushie...like a quickie sponge bath.  And since they come out nice and warm from our wipes warmer she doesn't mind at all.

The ones I have can also be used as doublers/liners in the diaper.  So handy!

Here's the Etsy seller I got them from: http://www.etsy.com/shop/wooldins

I got these organic bamboo ones...SO soft!
