Can I recycle old textbooks?

I have a pile of old college textbooks that I want to get rid of.  I checked into re-selling them, but they're close to 10 years old, so they're too outdated.  We have a paper recycling bin at church, but do I have to pull the pages out and do something else with the hardback covers?  Or can I throw the covers in, too?  I know they won't take brown paper (like grocery bags).  Thanks!

Re: Can I recycle old textbooks?

  • I know my university used to donate out-of-date textbooks to third-world countries.  I'm about to go run some errands, but I'll do some searching later and see if I can find anything.
  • I don't know about recycling them, but I was able to send one that nobody would buy back to chegg when I returned a couple of my rental textbooks last quarter.  I assume that they recycle them or pass them on, and they plant a tree when you send them back even if they won't buy it.
  • Okay, it looks like one of our professors was collecting them to send to a university in Afghanistan, but I couldn't find the name of any organization he was working with.  I did, however, find this site that talks about different ways to donate your textbooks: http://www.nationalserviceresources.org/practices/17645
