Silly poll, what kind of milk do you buy?

Last week MH brought home some organic milk from the grocery.  We hadn't bought it before, we usually just buy regular skim milk.  I grew up drinking 2% but when Ian and I moved in together he insisted we buy skim so I adjusted to it (although it's so watery thin sometimes).  Anyway, I loved the organic milk.  Comparing costs, organic is about $4 more a gallon than our regular skim.  Do you guys buy organic milk?  Any preference? Just curious :)  Perhaps it's a silly question but I did taste a noticeable difference.

Re: Silly poll, what kind of milk do you buy?

  • We've read that milk is one of the things you should really buy organic.  So B is buying organic skim milk for himself.  I'm lactose intolerant so I use soy.  I tried getting lactaid but I decided that I just don't like the taste of cow milk after getting used to soy.

  • I buy organic soy and organic 1%.
  • I used to drink 2% and so did DH but then he decided to switch to skim to cut back on calories.  honestly I hate milk and don't ever drink it...I only have it with cereal, or occasionally I will have chocolate milk...so to me the switch from 2% to skim wasn't a big deal.  we don't buy organic or anything though.
  • I don't drink milk, but I buy organic 1% milk for my H and DD.
  • I go back and forth between 1 and 2%.  I don't like milk much so I only use on cereal and things and frankly, my daughter doesn't like it either but I must make her drink something, so she drinks strawberry or chocolate milk.

I grew up on skim and that's all we were allowed to drink at meals.  I'm grateful for that but just couldn't do it to my daughter.  She truly hates it.  My husband grew up on whole milk!!  HELLO!  I have to admit, it does taste better to me but you just can't drink that everyday!  His mom still drinks whole and we buy it for her when she comes to visit!  Indifferent

  • Horizon Organic is the best. If I drink other milk, it tastes chemical-like. I don't know if it is something that they use to clean the equipment or something in the milk. I'll never buy non-organic milk.

  • We don't buy a lot of milk, but I do enjoy it when I have it.  Just plain ol' milk is already expensive here, so when we do buy it, we usually buy non-organic skim (although I prefer 2%).  Never tried organic milk before.  I think the brand I normally see at our local grocery store is Horizon.  Maybe I'll give it a try one day.
  • Just regular ole milk. We don't have organic available in my town. We vary between skim and whole milk, depending on what's cheapest at the time - honestly, I don't really worry about the extra calories in whole milk because even that is only what...4-5% fat? Something like that - still pretty low, anyway, and we really don't go through a lot of it so it's not an area I worry about cutting back on. Now if I could get Ben to stop drinking gallons of sugar-filled Coke every week, THAT might make a difference to his waistline......
  • We buy skim milk. When I was kindergarten (and happily drinking whole milk), our pediatrician told my parents that my brother and I were getting too fat and told us to switch out of whole milk. So within 2 years, we went from whole to 2% to 1% to skim and I've been drinking skim ever since.

MH was drinking 1% when we got married and we would get 1 gallon skim and 1 gallon 1% in the beginning. But it went to waste often, so now we're both on skim. Since I got pg, we buy organic about half of the time and the other half of the time, we just make sure the milk is not from cows treated with rBST.

  • We buy Horizon Organic, but Marino is the only one who drinks milk in the house.
  • I buy organic milk.  The hormones in non-organic milk scare me.  Also, I was drinking skim milk, but have been reading about the petroleum processes used to remove the fat from milk and am horrified by it.  I'm drinking 2% now, on my way to making to switch to whole because I'm trying to cut out all processed foods.  Anything I can do to get food in it's most natural state is best, IMO.
  • I grew up on skim, and that's all I can drink.  Even 1% tastes too thick for me.  But I just buy regular, not organic.  I don't drink a lot of milk, but I do like cereal now and then.

  • We drink organic 1%, and I believe there is a taste difference.  I can't really describe it, but even my girlfriend's young daughters noticed when they came over and now they ask for it, too.  Maybe it's in the aftertaste or something...

Milk was the first product we started buying organic once we could afford it.  We drink a lot of milk, so thankfully Costco stocks it and it comes out to about $3 per half gallon.  I'm very budget conscious, but I think the benefits outweigh the costs in this situation.  All those add-ins really frighten me.

  • Organic Skim or 1%, Organic Soy and Organic Almond milk.  I love skim milk, but MH thinks it's too thin so if I know he'll be drinking milk, too, I buy 1%.  Normally he drinks all Soy Milk, but we've been trying to cut out some soy from his diet (he's also vegetarian - so we pick and choose what to soy up), so we're switching it up with some almond milk, which doesn't taste too bad.  Now rice milk is another story, at least for us.  One brand is called "Rice Dream" but we call it "Rice Nighmare" - we can't stand that stuff.
  • interesting responses here....i personally don't drink cant stand it not even as a child did i like it and now with all of my endocrine problems my dr has told me to stay away from all dairy-since marrying me my hubby has become much more health conscious and he has been looking into different milk alternatives-such as coconut milk, almond milk, and rice milk-no soy for us-as over 90 % of the soy in the US is genetically modified.  Sometimes I will by him raw milk as a treat from the farmer's market or the raw coop we belong to or I will buy him the brugere's that comes in the glass bottles-but hey i am a bit of a food nut
  • We buy SKIM milk only... Even 1% or 2% tastes really thick to me. I don't drink it though. I hate milk! It's funny reading this b/c I thought I was the only one who doesn't like milk. I use it on cereal but actually drain each spoonful before eating the cereal so I'm always left with a bowl full of milk. I got into the habit of doing that b/c I used to be allergic to milk as a child and so I had to drink powdered milk and that was gross.

I like both skim or 2% in my lattes - but I only like lattes from Starbucks!

We don't buy organic. Because neither of us DRINKS milk plain... Just use it for cereal and coffee.

  • I drink 1% and I drink a lot of milk.  I love it!  I have it at every meal I eat at home.

  • We buy 1% (I was a Skim Milk girl before I dated J, but he wasn't having it).  I was not much of a milk drinker/user before becoming PG and even then, not until I had GD did I actually drink it daily.  We used to get organic when we lived in CA and shopped at Trader Joe's.  Here organic is much more so we've been getting non-organic that comes from a local dairy.  We hope to switch over to organic now that Libby is here though.
  • I only drink skim. that is what I grew up on & everything else tastes way too greasy for me.  We only buy the hormone & antibiotic free milk (though I don't know if it is "organic" or not).

  • I drink 2% Organic and won't ever go back.  Last weekend during the snow I was forced to drink regular milk and you really can taste the difference.  Love my Organic milk.
  • MH drinks 1% Organic Milk and I'm lactose intolerant so I drink Organic Soy Milk. I always think about trying Coconut, Almond or Rice Milk but it's so hard to adjust to a different taste especially when it comes to milk.

  • I stopped drinking milk (even Soy and eating any kind of obvious dairy) when Ashton was 4 weeks old.  I missed it at first and now I'm kind of okay with not having any. I do miss ice cream during b-day parties.  I hope to reintroduce it in a few months.

When I did buy milk, I would buy the skim milk from Costco. I will have to try the organic milk once I start again.

  • we buy organic.  It's crazy how different regular tastes when we have to buy that kind instead.

We have also half heartedly switched to a local dairy that still bottles in glass (it is suppose to be even better b/c of lack of travel time).
