I think I need to remove the mature grape vines from

our pergola. :*(   The pergola  is attached to our house and it attracts raccoons nightly (usually 7 very large ones....).  A little too close for comfort for us.  I am thinking of replacing the grapes with Wisteria vines.  Does anybody have any experience with Wisteria?  Approximately how long will it take to grow full and cover a fairly long pergola?

Re: I think I need to remove the mature grape vines from

  • I can't tell you exactly how long it would take for the wisteria to cover but I can tell you that the Japanese and Chinese wisterias are listed as invasives. So, they are fast growers and would cover the pergola fairly quickly.

Though there is an American wisteria (Wisteria frutescens) that is told to be a good alternative. There are other alternatives to wisteria. Let me know if you want the names.

  • Hi Laddie!  Yes, throw some other suggestions my way!  I am so sick that I have to take down the grapevines.  The previous home owner (and person responsible for my beautiful little backyard) would probably kill me if he ever found out.  I need something that is beautiful, fragrant, non-edible and fast growing.  Thanks!

  • Here you go. Be sure to check these plants for hardiness zones.

American wisteria (Wisteria frutescens) - I haven't actually seen this around, so I can't tell you what it looks like (I'm guessing very similar to the Oriental varieties) or how it grows except what I can find on the interwebs.

trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans) - This one has holdfasts to attach itself to things. It's a calcium like glue that will probably discolor the wood a bit. It has bright orange/yellow trumpet shaped flowers and flowers in the summer.

trumpet honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) - This one is a spring flowering vine with blue-green leaves. LOTS of flowers but it loses its leaves during the summer.

Dutchman?s pipe (Aristolochia macrophylla) - Dutchman's pipe has quite unusual flowers that are very pretty. It's a coiling vine. So, it will just wrap itself around its support.

crossvine (Bignonia capreolata) - Crossvine is a slightly fragrant vine that climbs with tendrils. It blooms in the spring with orange/brown/red flowers.
