Teachers in CPS?

Hello,

My DH and I will be moving to Chicago in a few months and I was wondering if any of you moved to Chicago from out of state and applied for teaching certification in IL and applied to jobs in CPS.  I am looking to teaching in Chicago proper and am feeling overwhelmed right now.  Any tips, tricks, or ideas I should use when trying to move, get certified, and apply to teaching jobs?  TIA!

Re: Teachers in CPS?

  • I'm just going to say good luck... finding a job in cps right now is a beast. If you have experience, that'll help. If you have a few endorsements, that also helps. They like to hire 1 person who can do the job of 3 if you know what I mean. Check the e-bullletin every wednesday on the cps hr website, go to the job fairs (crazy crowded and a waste of time, but the booklet has all the current vacancies that you can pursue and follow-up on outside the fair). Also check non-cps listings through k12jobspot, archdiocese of chicago, IASA job bank, cook county regional office of education, and even local museums with education depts.

When it comes to certification, isbe is the site to use. Do what you can online bc people in the local office tend to "misplace" things and give you the runaround.?

Also, I found that some jobs open up in spring/early summer, but a lot of teachers resign in august so that they keep benefits through the summer. So end of summer and even the first week of school are hot times for openings.

Again, good luck! It's not a fun process...
  • Start now.  I moved into CPS from out of state.  I became email buddies with certification.  Personally, I thought it was pretty easy to get certified, but this is also the 4th state I have been certified in.  You may need to take a test or two to fulfill requirements.  They also only take so many years of experience.  I lost 1 or 2 years of teaching when I moved here.  If you can get into the burbs, it's better.  The CPS system can be super shady.  CPS pays more, but the benefits of working in the suburbs outweighs the pay difference.

As far as getting a job, it is very difficult.  I have friends who have been looking for years.  I emailed and mailed a resume to every single school.  I drove in for every job fair, which is really worthless.  I even stayed with a friend for the summer in order to get my job.  I got my position by being readily available and having previous experience in inner city schools.  I also was looking to complete my Masters and eventually National Boards which is always appealing.

Best of luck and if you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.

  • As pp said the job market for CPS right now is pretty rough.  I subbed all last year which is a good way to get your foot in the door and the pay is not bad.  Of course I still couldn't get a job with CPS even with my connections with the schools that I subbed with.  I am currently teaching at a Catholic school part time.

The only good news is that they changed the rules a year or two ago about teachers losing their benefits before the end of the summer.  Now they are guaranteeing them their benefits through August and actually offering a small financial insentive for those teachers who are among the first to resign or retire.
