So as I mentioned in a post yesterday, the nursery painting has officially begun. As has the man cave painting - they're both pretty small rooms, and it made sense to do them at the same time. So yesterday they both got the undercoat done, and today they're getting the trim painted (I know this seems backwards since you usually do the walls before the trim, but on this one occasion I have a good reason for doing it in this order and it will actually work out better - trust me).
And OMG, Ben is starting to make me crazy. I know he doesn't like painting. Neither do I. And although I'm not great at it, he's, well...a lot worse, to be honest. That's why I originally suggested that we hire a painter to do the rooms, even though it would obviously cost more. But as you may recall, he insisted he wanted to do it himself, so I agreed.
He just called me up to take a look at the trim, and now he's mad because I said it would need another coat. "But I don't like painting! My arms are sore! Why isn't this good enough?" Oh I don't know, how about because the original paint is still showing through in big streaks? He's also sulking because this has taken all weekend (well, half of each day over the weekend) and he thought it would only take less than a day (WTF? doesn't he remember when we painted our last apartment?).
*sigh* I don't expect this to turn out perfectly, but a little better than half-assed would still be good. Sorry for venting, but I need to say this all somewhere or I'll end up yelling at him the next time he starts whining about it. I just keep telling him that he's doing a great job (especially since the only thing I could help with was the taping) and that I really appreciate the effort he's putting into this...but I might still end up killing him.
ETA: Oh no. He's taking a bath so I just went and looked. It is...awful. I'm not exaggerating. It looks terrible. Some places are patchy, others have big fat lines of paint dribble, and in a few places it looks like he's gouged the surface with the edge of the paint roller. I know he's trying his best, but he has ZERO patience with this kind of thing and it shows. A lot. Why did I agree to this? Whywhywhywhywhy....
Re: I will not kill my husband. I will not kill my husband. I will not...
I'm totally laughing because I feel your pain!!! Todd and I both despise painting, but I'm a freak about having each wall in my home painted when I move in. 3 years into in, it's still not done, but I digress.....anyhoo, he wanted to help me with the painting over the summer with a wall that I was painting a chocolate raspberry color. He was the only one tall enough to get the bit on the wall up by the ceiling and there is now a huge spot of this dark color on the white ceiling that I'm sure will be there for eternity. And, it's right in our entryway.
Keep us posted on the final product....and on whether or not Ben makes it out alive!

Eek. Vent away. That's why I love this board. I can post hateful things about my mom, for example, get them off my chest and get good advice/feedback and not rip her face off.
So...I am thinking this might be a case of "quit while you're ahead." Ben's tried to do the job and admits he hates it. You're not happy with the results. Can you hire someone to come in and fix what's been done (drips will be there forever unless they are sanded off and redone) and finish the job? Seroiusly.
Otherwise, you're going to be hating it and trying to redo it yourself after the babies come. For real. The first time they sleep for 3 hours straight you'll be tip toeing around the nursery with sandpaper trying to get the drips off and then repainted.

Ouch - sounds like that would be painful to look at. Maybe a gentle suggestion (and subtle guilt) to add that extra undercoat (despite the sore arms) because the babies will love it and will be so proud when they look back at pictures of their nursery that their dad worked so hard on.
And this is probably evil but is any of his family close enough to drop by and comment with something like "ohh, looks like it's coming along but another coat of paint would make it look fabulous.."
Worst case, dim lighting will make for a cozy nursery and maybe hide those paint flaws.
Good luck!
*sigh* This was what I was thinking, but he is still INSISTING that he wants to do it himself. I really don't know what to do.
I've told him gently but very clearly that if he wants to keep doing it, then he will need to fix the problems and he's said OK...so we'll see how that goes...
Unfortunately, not really. I'm actually glad his dad isn't helping - he painted their whole house and, well, it's not great. And all of Ben's friends are nerds who probably wouldn't know which end of the brush to hold lol.
