Buying in bulk

Hi there,

We're starting to bake our own bread and pancake mix now and I would like to buy the ingredients (mostly WW flour) in bulk from our local co-op.  Because I'm looking to buy larger amounts, what do you put it in to purchase it?  At my co-op, they only have little plastic containers or smallish plastic bags to put bulk items in.  Do you have special containers that they weigh  out before you fill them up?

TIA!

Re: Buying in bulk

  • We use the containers that they provide at the store, or the bags if we're getting a large amount.  We have a few canisters at home that we use for things we use on a very regular basis, but we leave things like rice, beans, quinoa, etc in the plastic containers we get at the store.

Instead of grabbing new containers each time we go, we have a couple extra of each size that we wash on the top rack of the dishwasher and take back to the store with us.  That way we're not using tons of extra bags or containers.

  • They should have big bags like the ones in the produce section (or, you could use those, if they do not).  There are other options, but since you'll be buing a large amount, it would be unrealistic to bring a large enough container for it.

  • The co-op we go to has a very large plastic bag option (and a few other smaller sizes) in the bulk aisle so we use those or we bring the container we store that item in.  They have a scale in the bulk aisle to weigh containers before filling them.  I have seen people bring something like this for flour.  http://www.kingarthurflour.com/shop/items/large-flour-bucket

  • We use the plastic containers they have in the bulk area. We just wash them out every week and bring them back to use. I do wish they had larger sizes. They only have a 16 oz and a 32 oz so sometimes I bring large ziplock bags. I have a bunch of those that I've kept for reuse.
