Need help with Charlotte Area

We are moving to Charlotte in August but don't know which is the best areas to live in.  We don't want to live in the city itself but a good family area around there.  I have an at home daycare and need an area with working moms.  Right now we live in a more country area of SC and most women stay at home.  When I look for houses they usually say the school area so if anyone can tell me the good area verses what to stay away from.  Like in my area I know the Bob Jones University is a bad part of town and I know which high school are good.  So I am looking for that kind of guides if you can.  Thanks So much for any help.

Re: Need help with Charlotte Area

  • Do you know which side of town you will be working on?

If you do't want to live in the city but still in the county-Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson.  I love Davidson, its a cute town and Davidson college. Lake Norman is in this part of the county.

On the complete other side of town there are Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville.  There is a new high school opening up in Mint Hill next year.  I teach in the school system, there are sooo many schools, it depends on exactly where you live as to whether or not the school is good.  For example, there is a great school in Highland Creek. If you live right outside of Highland Creek, you will probably not be assigned that school.

I teach at a pretty high poverty school, but less than 4 min. away is another school that is more diverse/lower poverty.

There are great schools in the city.  Some of the more popular magnet programs are in the city (Highland Mill Montessori, Smith Language Academy, are pretty popular).

If we move in the next 3 years, I would love to live in Dilworth, Myers Park, Sedgefield or Plaza/Midwood.  These are neighborhoods closer to downtown, older homes, good schools, but are pretty pricey areas to live in.  Myers Park being the highest followed closely by Dilworth.  Plaza/Midwood is very close to NoDa, an artsy area going through a gentrification of sorts.  Your next door neighbors could be artsy grad students, a young family, an older couple that has lived there for years, or drug dealers, lol. My friend that lives in Plaza/Midwood has some extra sketchy neighbors down the street- we think there is prostitution occurring, from the sounds of it.

If you don't want to be in Mecklenburg county-your options are Union County which is growing rapidly or Cabarrus County to the north.

  • I'd definitely look in Huntersville, Concord, Matthews, Davidson...
