16 years old is too old for your mom to mash up pills into juice because you can't swallow them.
i gave MIL a side eye and some serious attitude about this over the weekend.
Re: ALSO
eh, pill hangups are easy to ignore if you're not the one with them. It's still a fight to get my pills down my gullet every day.
But age 16, you can squish them yourself. Or have applesauce/jam/whatever instead of juice.
(are all the kids pills ABLE to be crushed? nothing time release?)
No, gbck. you still attempt to get them down, right?
if you can swallow food, you can certainly try and swallow pills. 16 year olds take adult medicine most of the time. even if there is a hangup, mom shouldn't placate her. and yes, she can mash them herself.
i have a hard time with 16/17 year olds being babied.
If I"m having a bad day, I've given up on trying to swallow them w/o either pulling out a pill splitter or getting out applesauce. (and I've battled w/ nurses who try to make me do it 'their' way...NO. Mine works; do you WANT me to choke on it or do you want me to get it down)
But, yeah, I was able to mash my own by the time I was 12.
And, hell, by the time she was 10, baby sis had learned to make sure she has 'chewable grape tylenol' at all times so she can get pain meds :-P
DH had that problem for eons (granted he ground up his own pills). He got that from his mom.
Pharma companies spend billions on how to best administer the maximum effective concetration while making it the most pleasant (pills vs IV administration, etc.). Trade secret #2 aside from active drug is binders and other compounds designed to release active drug (or ready to metabolize drug) at certain intervals under certain conditions. If a drug comes with specific instructions or is packaged in a certain way they're not there because pharma techs like to type stuff on bottles and manufacturers like to use their majik pill press.
I told him if he ever wanted to take a time-release pain killer without a fatal overdose, or to get the most out of an antibiotic for a UTI, he had to learn to swallow whole pills.
I gave him some tic-tacs and jelly beans to start on. If he chomped, no harm, no foul. I told him how I did it, and let him figure out the best way for him to swallow whole pills. If they got down without a chomp, it was all good.
it took me a long time to swallow pills on my own. basically, i was told that if i wanted to get better, i needed to swallow a pill.
you swallow food, you can swallow pills.
if i thought they'd listen to me, i'd suggest the tic tac idea. that's a good one.
i have an overall loathing regarding how my MIL is raising the kid.
I've never had a problem with pills. This is what did me in as a kid:
Mmmmmmmmm, orange Triaminic. That was my personal fave, I looked forward to it every time I had a stuffy nose or a cold when I was a kid. Too bad I'd have to slug down half the bottle to feel anything with that now.
