BR: newborn photographer?
I realize I am getting way ahead of myself, but I have been casually checking out local photographers for a newborn photoshoot. So far none of them share the copyright with you (like my wedding photographer did). Did you find that was the norm with baby photogs? I think it is ridiculous to pay $20 for each individual pic you want.
Just curious what you experienced...thanks!

Its there same here....and the one photog that I did offer to share copyright was way more expensive then the ones who didn't. I did find one that had packages that included your choice of 3, 5, 10 or all on DVD. We went with that photog.

Whoa. I am feeling incredibly lucky...our photog charged us $100 for the Baby Bundle...photo sessions at 3-6-9-12 months. For an added $100 we got the newborn session AND she gave us our maternity session for free since she wanted to build her portfolio.
We bought 10 of our maternity shoot shots on CD with rights for $175. We're getting 40 shots of Libby's NB session on CD with rights for $275. This includes post-production, retouching, etc.
We can print our own and post on the web, etc. She does offer print packages, but we prefer to go with the digital files.
Oh and we were the first baby for her to photograph in 2010 (she was having a promo for the first baby in 2010) so we got a $150 credit to spend...we're using it to buy the CD. How cool is that?

$25 per session is definitely a steal!

Vanessa - This was my experience as well. I even found some really awesome photographers that had a minimum print order of $500 per session! I would have loved to have chosen those photographers but could not see us spending that much on prints each time!
I think that if you are able to find someone who is up and coming and wanting to develop their portfolio like Lori's photographer, then you can get a great deal. Otherwise, if you are looking for an established photographer, most will not give you the digital images w/o charging you quite a bit for them. It's kind of like when we were all searching for photographers for our DWs... I am sure that mrsbeachybride did not have to pay that much for her DW photos...but after Jessica Claire became known on the knot for DWs, her min. charge became $10K!!! so when it comes to photographers I truly believe that you get what you pay for...unless you are lucky enough to find/catch a photog. that is up and coming and hasn't been discovered yet
keep looking though, and don't forget to use your local nest/bump boards to get some recommendations

Lori, that was a great price! Your photog was amazing too.
Jaime, great ideas about using an up and coming photographer.
A co-worker's daughter is good friends with a maternity/newborn photographer so I'm familiar with her work (co-worker has two grand kids). Anyway, she has a package on her website that includes; maternity, newborn and 6 month sessions for one fee of $350.00 Plus 15% off prints for all sessions. The only thing is this, prints are $45 for a 5x7, eeek! The 3 sessions sound good to me... oh and digital collections start at $875.00 I'm thinking the prints will definitely add up... and the $875 + sounds like quite a bit. Something to think about I guess

I hope I'm not sounding a little crusty here, but I can't stress how much time and equipment goes into producing a beautiful image. It's just not about snapping photos like you would on a P&S camera. There is so much that happens in the background both technical and business related. That's why it's expensive.
Good photographers constantly invest in developing their craft and investing in good equipment. And trust me, it's so expensive and time consuming to become really good at what they do.
Here's a really good link about why custom photography costs more:

I like some ideas that were posted above replies. Maybe try and find someone who is "up and coming". That way, they're probably not charging similar rates that someone who has been in business for a while. I wish I could give you a ballpark on what you should pay, but it's tough without seeing their work.
Hope that helps?
