XP: I never post here, but I have a question & need resources, please.

My friend's husband was just diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer (I'm not exactly sure what kind, though) and she asked me to help her find some resources for cleaner heathier living, household cleaning, and eating. I'm trying to gather up some info for her about all natural cleaning products free of harmful chemicals, any tips or tricks to reducing chemical exposure in the home. Also, they have 2 dogs and 3 cats, so any pet recs would be appreciated as well. I'd like to put together as many links as possible for her, so if you have any that you'd like to share, I'd love to hear them Thanks in advance!

  • A lot of ladies make their own stuff, but I haven't made it that far yet.

I buy my laundry detergent online:

They should definitely look into their cosmetics and toiletries as well.  They'll probably be shocked at the chemicals in there as well - avoid parabens, phylates, and other stuff.  Big hits are shampoos, lotions, deodorants.  I'm a big burt's bees fan, no recs on deodorant yet - I haven't switched there.  Burt's Bees is available at Target.

Soap wise I love Ross Soaps from etsy.  Some of his types are vegan and others are made from goat's milk and other natural ingredients. http://www.etsy.com/shop/rossoaps

I love 7th Generation cleaning Products and you can get them at Target.  I use their dish detergent, but it still has SLS in it and I'm not 100% satisfied, but I like that it's ecofriendly and lower chemicals.  Their laundry detergent also has SLS in it, which is why I buy the crunchy clean online.  http://www.seventhgeneration.com/

  • Avoid combining heat, plastics and food (use glass, ceramic or steel, etc.).
Choose organic produce when possible because agricultural chemicals are closely linked to cancers.  Some produce stores these chemicals more than others (the "dirty dozen" in this link, that you want to be sure to choose organic), while others tend to be less contaminated (the clean 15) and can be relatively safe, even if conventional: http://www.foodnews.org/images/09shoppersguide-purpleimage.jpg
For non-produce foods, choose those that have been minimally processed and do not contain chemical additives (preservatives, etc.).

  • For pets a good rule of thumb is, "would i eat/apply/etc this myself?"  No?  Probably should be given to the pets.
Reducing red meat intake has been recommended to those i know with cancer, but i'm not sure if it is for general health or for cancer, specifically.  Best wishes for his speedy recovery!

  • Your library is a great resource! In the 300's of the nonfiction (sorry, can't think of the exact location), there should be lots of great books on how to live a more chemical-free lifestyle.
