food craving / complaint...

i want apple cider and chocolate fudge from a local farm (like 2 miles from my house) - I have been craving these ALL DAY...

I'm working from home, so I'd normally just run out for 15 minutes - but my car won't start. stupid f'ing weather - I have no clue what's wrong with it, but i'm assuming it's got something with the cold and 2+ feet of snow that fell this weekend.

the heater will turn on, as will the lights - but the battery light, oil temp light, and check engine light all come on. I don't think i need a jump because the battery is working. When I try to start it, it won't kick over. I am getting a clicking noise. I got a new starter about 4 years ago, so I don't think it's that. it was running fine before the snow. Any suggestions short of calling AAA? That's my next step.

Re: food craving / complaint...

  • The clicking is the starter.  Can you access the bottom of the starter?  I would tap it a few times to see if you can get it to work.

  • I don't know anything about cars - i can change my lightbulbs and that's about it. I'll check the owner's manual and see if I can find the starter. what do i tap it with? I was wondering if something was frozen. last time my starter died it was a gradual process.
  • Sometimes they just seize and need a little kick to get stuff unstuck.  Maybe a wrench, screwdriver.  Not a giant jab, just a tappity tap.

  • hmm...I've never played w/ starter fluid in a 'new' car...I don't suppose you have any around anyhow?

DO you have a booster for the battery?  (that can be the problem w/ cold sometimes)

  • no starter fluid. my car is like 14+ yo. I have a 97 subaru legacy wagon - hand-me-down from my dad. it has less than 100K miles on it. normally it runs fine.

i checked the owners manual, but there was nothing in the index on the starter. i'm trying to find a diagram online.

I don't know if the battery has a booster. if it's standard then i'd guess yes, if not then probably not. i thought it might be the battery since the battery light it coming on, but DH says it isn't because my heater and lights work.

  • By booster I'm thinking something you take the battery out and attach it to...

we have one (or 3) but...we'r enot normal on that front.

    helpful link maybe?
