gossip, and a FB rant. (may be long...)

so my cousin turned 30 this weekend.

i called her to ask her if she wanted to go to lunch on Sat because that was her birthday day, and she said she'd let me know because her mother was taking her shopping. no problem.

I asked her if she has any plans for that night, and she said she wasn't sure - she had movies and dinner planned, but after that was up in the air. i told her that DH had his own plans to go out to see a bunch of his friends, and I did not want to go. I told her that I was free and she should let me know if she had nothing to do so we could do something after her dinner and movies.

I rarely go out for a late night, but heck it was her birthday, and no one should have nothing to do on their birthday.

So her birthday came and went without a phone call. I went to bed at 11, and DH got home and some ungodly hour. he told me she never showed up at the bar he was hanging out at, so I was wondering what she ended up doing.

I logged onto the computer Sunday morning to see a handful of FB updates on her status. Yes, she's 30:

-Cannot wait for this day to be over

-tired, wish i stayed in bed today

-just when you need people to be there for you, they flake out

yada yada yada.

I was a little offended. after all, i wasn't trying to go out with her out of pity, but because she spent my 30th bday with me, and we would have just hung out and kept each other company.

so of course, people were all woe is her, and asking her what happened.

"nothing, i guess it just wasn't in the cards for me. all my plans fell through."

that pissed me off.

i participated in the FB shennanigans by adding to her page, "I guess you must not care for my company, because I asked if you wanted to do anything and you said you'd let me know. I never got a phone call to say that your plans fell through."

In retrospect, I think she got exactly what she wanted for her 30th bday, and that was a pity party. I don't have time for that. If someone is having problems, they can share it with me any time. But to act as if no one cares when really you mean, "the random hookups i had at the bar don't care enough to want to spend my birthday with me" does not make me feel badly for anyone. ESPECIALLY when she had full control over the funtimes she could have had.

The end.

Re: gossip, and a FB rant. (may be long...)

  • ::three snaps in a z::  Good for you Wzz.  I'd pee on her pity party parade, too.

  • I read this and I see, "Cousin wanted to hang out with random dude from bar, who probably doesn't even remember her, and she did not want hang out with anyone else, because she had her heart set on him, so she threw herself a pity party." I don't think this has anything to do with you, or anyone else.

  • see, here is what kills me.

if she doesn't like my company, i can live with that. good for her for prefering to spend her bday alone rather than with people she doesn't care for.

but to act as if she had no choice but to sit in misery because everyone she knows flaked out on her? hogwash. and the FB posting of all the poopy feelings is for the kids in HS, not a full grown adult. also, she could have made plans for herself and included people instead of waiting to see what other people wanted to do for her.

oh well. i don't mind getting a full night's sleep.

  • Yes, yes should COULD have, but she chose not to. Instead, she waiting around hoping for bar guy to come and sweep her away on his white steed. Get your sleep on.

  • I'm with Min. This had nothing to do with how much or how little she wanted to hang out with you, and everything to do with the fact that you aren't the flavor of the month dude that she was hoping would be into her enough to want to take her out.

Yes, it's still immature. But it shouldn't be taken as an affront to you.

  • This is a lesson for everyone. Spend your day being happy for the people who want to be around you rather than being miserable about the people who don't. Makes no sense to me.

FTR, this has nothing to do with me. I don't mind if she wanted to be with me or not, for whatever her reason is. I just thought her whining was stupid and unnecessary because she created the situation for herself.
