winter gas/heating bill

just out of curiosity, how much does your gas bill go up during the cooler months?

I just received the bill for our old place and our closing bill is $111 (!!!) typically it was under $15 a month during the warmer months.

I'm concerned because in our old place is smaller, newer, and well insulated and we still had a $111 bill. Our new place is big, old, cold and I would imagine not that well insulated. FTR, We're keeping our thermostat at 60 when we're not at home, and 65-68 when we are at home at the new house.

Re: winter gas/heating bill

  • Last bill it was $29.  It's just over 1k sq ft, very well insulated, no gas dryer, and for the majority of the time have the thermostat set at 62 (a few times set at 66).

ETA: In the warmer month's it's been around $12.

ETAx2: We also have an almost commercial ac/heating unit.

  • We are at $140 or $150 for last month. The thermastadt claims I keep it at 73, but it seems to be more like 68. (It's on 24/7 since I work from home) For December when it was a bit warmer, our bill was $85ish. HTH
  • November it wwas $14, December $37, and January 33.  It's usually set between 62 and 68, warmer as needed.  $111 seems high - are you sure it's not a bill for 2 months or something?

  • Last month our bill was $87. Normally we're in the $10-15 range. Our rental is in desperate need of new windows & better insulation so we keep our thermastat pretty low and use a small space heater if needed to warm up the bedroom before we go to sleep.

I need to check a hard copy to be sure (and of course I can't remember my login to look online), but I looked at our bill from last year in Jan and it was $87. So I guess $111 could be correct.

ETA duh, I didn't pay my last bill. I must have forgotten while I was traveling. This is still helpful though. I'm nervous that our bill is going to be OOC trying to heat the new house.

  • I didn't realize that it was so much more expensive to heat an older home.  Perhaps down the road you might want to look into getting your windows checked for maximum insulation.  I think I'm saying that right but I could be wrong.
  • our windows are all newer, but we are going to look into replacing the insulation. I think a lot of the problem is that this house is a raised foundation home, and we have a lot of hard surfaces (wood & tile)

going to be a learning process, for sure.

  • Ok see that all went over my head.  Shows how much I know about this stuff.
  • Last month it was $115.  Our house is two stories, about 2300 square feet.  We keep the thermostat at about 70 and it's pretty much been on 24/7.  It's generally freezing downstairs but cozy upstairs.
