f/u to bad paint job

After the debacle of The World's Worst Paint Job over the weekend, I was ready to call in a pro...but Ben insisted he wanted to keep doing it, so I told him OK - as long as he would fix all of the errors I pointed out (which were, well, a lot).

I just went upstairs to see how it was going, and although it's still not the most beautiful paintwork in the world, it is a LOT better than it was. He definitely wasn't happy with the number of things I pointed out that needed fixing but he has made an effort to take care of all of them, and even though it's still not perfect, it's at least decent - now you only notice the problems when you look close up, and not when you first walk in the room, and I can live with that (at least until I can wield a paintbrush again lol).

I know this may not seem like a huge deal, but you have to understand how much Ben a) hates painting and b) hates having his work on chore-type things criticized. So it really does show how much he's wanting to contribute to the bebbeh-growing project that he's doing this...maybe not always with the best attitude lol, but he's really making an effort. I may not end up killing him over this after all. Stick out tongue

ETA: oh, and a follow up to the issue about his parents buying used carseats...Ben spoke to his dad and explained the problem (he explained that it's like a motorcycle helmet - one crash and it's trash) and his dad was very accepting and understood the issue. Anyway, we discovered that the RTA (the Aussie version of the DMV) offers a service where they will check out a used carseat and tell you if it's still OK to use or not - so we've told Ben's parents that if they will do that and if the RTA clears it, we'll be OK with them using the carseats on the rare occasions (we're talking probably only a couple times a year, max) that they will need to transport the kids.

Re: f/u to bad paint job

  • That's sweet.  It's fun to see the men nest, too.  DH is going crazy in the nursery.  He painted, installed trim around the doors and closets (it's the first room to get this designer treatment!), designed and installed custom shelving in the two closets, upgraded the closet doors, and next is hanging new wood blinds and a ceiling fan. I'm wondering if I'll ever get a chance to get in there and put in my womanly touches!  But it's so adorable all the love and care he's putting in, in his own way.  Gotta love 'em!

Ooooh does he want to come to my house? Stick out tongue We tore out the half-assed, ridiculous shelves that the previous owner put in there (they were SO weird - they stuck out from the left and right walls of the closet instead of the back and were tiny) so now I'm trying to figure out what I want to put in there instead. I'm thinking of just some kind of cheap closet organizing system for the time being, that we can upgrade later on if we want to.

  • I'm so happy things worked out and the paint job looks decent. Kudos to you for supporting him in his efforts to contribute.

  • That is good - don't think I got to reply to your other post but we had about the same issue with the shelves that needed to be hung up in the nursery.

Normally I would be the one to do it but MH said I shouldn't be on a ladder with a drill (good point) so he wanted to do it.  Ugh - second choice would have been my dad but I think MH kind of wanted to prove that he could do it w/out calling in the handy man dad.  So it only took 2 months (the first 2 were traumatizing), many cuss words, multiple holes in the wall (luckily all hidden by the shelves), and I'm still not sure they are purfectly straight, but they are good enough and he feels accomplished.  Yay for husbands who have their heard in the right place... right?  :)

And as for the carseats - that sounds like a good plan.  I have read that other countries don't have the used means automatically no good policy that is nice that they will check them out.  I was reading the stuff they look for anyways (just being anal about inspecting ours with all the padding off it after it was shipped) and it all seems like visual stuff they could find, especially for the limited use your ILs would see.

  • Yes....on all accounts!

Ha! I think the cheap ones are generally fine. We looked around at pre-made closet systems but thought they were pricey ($100+) and not very sturdy.  So, instead, we spent about $40 for the wood and (a day of labor later) we have two super sturdy systems -- big square cubby-like shelves and the clothes rod in one closet and more narrow shelving in another. These bad boys ought to last forever... even if our kid decides to climb and hang from them one day!

  • awww that is sweet of him. glad it's looking better. and honestly if it's just a little bit here and there, i would just paint the nursery right now...you will be so busy w/the pirates after they are born you won't want to do it.... i can't remember how far along i was, but if you recall, i did some of the painting in our nursery for the mural (the sheep, trees, etc) and we just made sure the room was well ventilated

oh and that's nice that the RTA will inspect the car seats for you. i've never heard of that service before. gives you more peace of mind b/c otherwise i'd never want to use a used car seat, even once!

  • Yay, that's awesome Lisa.  Kudos to Ben for taking it to the next level...babies make us grow...even before they get here! Yes
