Tiny black insects around indoor palm
We're new to plants...BIL is into them so he bought us an areca palm when we moved. We've noticed quite a few little flying insects, gnats possibly? They mainly hang around the soil, but some of them wander to other parts of the house and they're driving me crazy! How can we get rid of them without killing the palm?
Also, some leaves are turning yellowish brown and break off easily. Others have holes in them. Is this damage being caused by the little insects or possibly something else?
Re: Tiny black insects around indoor palm
Let the soil dry out before you water. I forget what those gnat-things are called, but they are attracted to damp soil. I don't think that they eat leaves, but the yellowing could be caused by too much water too.
Plants are pretty tough & can take a little insect damage. I wouldn't worry about the holes in the leaves unless it was a total infestation. Decreasing water will probably solve a lot of your issues.
