dumb rant.

My fSIL is quite possibly the sweetest person you could ever meet. She's almost the so-perfect-you-want-to-hate-her-but-you-can't type. I really like everything about her except this, and it's a sign of my own failings as a person that I let this bother me.

But she has the worst grammar I've ever seen. She's the one that gave H and me the sign that said "The Ducki's." She just posted a picture of my sister and me at her bridal shower on FB with the caption "great hostess' for a very special bridal shower." The apostrophe abuse makes me stabby.

Also, further proof that my brother is my mom's favorite: she, the snobbiest of grammar snobs, who corrects EVERYONE, has never said a word to fSIL about it.

Re: dumb rant.

  • I have a similar peeve about DH. He's ordinarily a grammar snob like I am. But he thinks "weary" and "wary" are the same thing. He'll say, "I'm weary of people of talk too much." I know he means "wary", but I don't correct him. Should I? I hate bad grammar, but I hate snotty people who correct bad grammar in regular conversation even more.
    ..
  • I don't correct. I just b1tch about it on the internet. H and I argue over the pronunciation of forte and the spelling of till (vs. 'til), but mostly those are just running jokes.
  • I correct H's grammar all of the time.  ALL. of. the. time.  He appreciates it though.  Esp. when he says "Honey, I'd really like to get a Hermies tie for that suit" instead of "Hermes."  I about died I was laughing so hard.  Hermies.  ::chuckle::

  • I'd correct it. I correct DH (and I guess he'd correct me) because I don't want him looking foolish in public.

EDIT - i'd correct him in private. bmom made me realize this. i don't want him going out into public using the wrong word or pronunciation.

  • I correct my husband in private, but generally not in front of other people. First of all, he's a smart man, and I'd like him to sound like it. Secondly, there's no way Bacon will learn to speak properly if her father doesn't, and I refuse to have two of them in the house using "them" instead of "those" or "drug" instead of "dragged".
