BR call me crazy - I could have a baby already. Semi-long update

I was diagnosed pre-eclamptic last Friday - BOO.  It all started at my 37 week appt. last Wednesday.  Elevated blood pressure, more than a trace of protein in my urine, and I was swollen.  I had to do the 24 hour urine collection (fun) and get some blood work and go back on Friday.  Oh and they didn't want me to go back to work so I stayed home and rested.

By Friday my BP was down (but not down to my "normal" - I'm always on the low end of the normal range), the swelling was gone, and my blood work was normal but my 24 hour urine results were above the allowable amount.  Any protein level over 300 is bad - mine was 360.  That isn't scary high, but too much to ignore.

So I became a candidate for induction.  I could have went in yesterday.  I said I would rather wait and because my numbers have all stayed stable or went down.  They are ok with that as long as I come in for extra tests (NSTs, blood work, and urine tests) and take my BP at home (I got to rent a really neat digital machine) 2 times a day.

In happier news I had really promising contractions all day yesterday and last night and I saw signs of the MP this morning - never thought I would be so excited to see stringy, bloody matter come out of me (sorry for the TMI).

I'm at work right now cleaning up my desk, packing up my laptop, and writing a few memos/directions of where to find files and updating the calendar and then I'm done although we agreed FMLA will start next week (love my boss).  I think he felt bad because I mentioned this all started last Weds and he knew I was in (a frustrating) day of Court all day that day before my appt.  I know that doesn't cause Pre-E, but it certainly didn't help my BP and being on my feet did make them more swollen than they ever have been before or since.

Re: BR call me crazy - I could have a baby already. Semi-long update

  • I'm sorry you have pre-E... i hope your baby decides to come on its own.  hopefully all your tests will come back ok so you aren't forced into an induction. but remember that no matter what happens, pre-E or not, you will have your baby in your arms soon and as long as he/she is healthy, that's all that matters :)
  • Sorry you are going through this. Pre-e can be very serious, so make sure you take your BP and get to the hospital if you have any unusual symptoms (especially epigastric pain). I hope you can get the baby out without the need for induction and you are both as healthy as possible. Keep us posted and good luck!
  • Like Sara said, pre-e can be very serious. Good luck and take care of yourself and baby!

  • Oh wow, like PP, please take good care of yourself and LO - so exciting that it's any day now! :)  And girl, you were in court last week? WOW.  Sorry it caused you stress... now that you are done with work kick those feet up and rest.

  • thanks girls - I know Pre-e is very serious and I hope my original post didn't make it seem like I wasn't taking it seriously.  I obviously discussed this all with the midwives and because my numbers are so low we all feel it is really something that can be closely monitored at this point.  If anything at all starts an upward trend then the approach will change quickly!  Pre-e can turn dangerous quickly so in order to do this I had to agree to daily phone check ins, and every 2-3 day office visits (in addition to knowing what signs would mean heading to the hospital immediately) and I monitor my BP and have urine dip sticks at home.

    Sanae - good luck!!!

I have acupuncture scheduled every day this week - starting tomorrow - with someone that specializes in women's issues (including pregnancy/labor induction) so hopefully that helps things along.

  • Wow, that's a lot going on...hope your baby decides to come on his/her own, but if not the most important thing is that the both of you are safe and healthy.  You'll be holding your baby soon enough!  GL!
  • I'm sorry to hear about the pre-e. Wishing you lots of healthy vibes and keep us posted!
