I *hate* having to sell myself. I hate having to say "blah blah blah, look at how awesome I am, look at all these awesome things I did this year, I'm such a badass, blah blah BLAH."
I get that it's a necessary evil to formally document your achievements, but surely there's a better way?? I think our boss should just post our accolades as soon as they happen on the company fridge with puffy magnets. It always worked for us growing up.
And yes, this is why I'm on the boards so much today. I work on my self-appraisal for five minutes, get disgusted, and come and surf the boards for a half hour until I get the stomach to work on it some more.

Re: vent: annual reviews
I know, right?? I wish my boss would just rate me. I've never had a job where I DIDN'T have to do a self-appraisal.
*sigh*
You hate them until you don't have them!
I've been in that same boat for the last 5 years ... it's a ridiculous thing to have to write.
Except this year ... when I'm actually looking forward to my yearly assesment so I can *ahem* get a few things off my chest, they announce we aren't doing them.
How cooooonvenient. The year you take away 401K reimbursements, limit our vacation time, take away the option to work from home, refuse to give anyone a raise, go on a hiring freeze when we're terribly understaffed ... I could go on, but you get the point. Then you tell us in one big company announcement what a bad-ass quarter we had financially and what wonderful employees we are ... and you don't want to do yearly assesments? How terribly convenient.
lol...our company has done the same crap to us...only our yearly assessment doesn't give us the opportunity to voice our opinions about the company...just to defend our right to our job, I guess.
Whoah! There are times when I daydream about doing that ... but in reality, I think that would be terrible! Especially knowing that your coworkers were the ones reviewing you!
I can write you yours without even knowing what you do. I'm good at fluff, I learned it at Dell
