Kefir

What brands do you like?  I've always wanted to try it, and our store had some on sale this weekend so I bought some (Evolve brand).  It's really good, but much thicker than I was expecting it to be.  Are they all almost yogurt thick?

How do you consume it?  So far, I've drank some, mixed some with some orange juice to thin it a little (I liked it!) and mixed it with some milk in my steel cut oats.

Just curious!  : )

Re: Kefir

  • Yeah, its pretty thick. I like the idea of mixing it in steel cut oats! Otherwise, I pretty much just take a glug now and then. Its one of those things I don't buy often.

I had been thinking I could just use it as a replacement for milk now and then to change things up when I eat them uncooked, and as a bonus it would be like strawberry flavored milk.  Not so much, but it was still delicious!

  • We drink a ton of the Lifeway ( I think that is what it is) in pomegranate and strawberry flavor.  We didn't really like blueberry.  It's thick but not quite as thick as yogurt, just a little thinner.

We've only had it by the glass.  We'll have to try it some other ways.

  • My DH likes the cappuchino flavor and just chugs it. It smells like buttermilk to me, which he claimed it didn't taste like but then admitted he'd never had buttermilk. lol
  • I make my own with culture from www.cheesemaking.com and mostly use it for smoothies.

Fun!  I'll look into it someday when I have more time to investigate.  : )

  • Yes, they are all about that thick. My daughter drinks it in place of milk. The probiotics really help her immune system :) She drinks it as is and generally drinks two sippys a day of it.

I buy the Lifeway brand but have also bought the Trader Joe's brand and just recently discovered the Organic Valley brand, although it's not so affordable for us right now ($6 a bottle, whereas Lifeway is always on sale at our store for less than $3).

  • Nancy's Orgainic is very good!:)  But is is very easy to make your self.

Ew, really?  I normally call the brand Nasty Nancy's because everything I've bought I've hated.  I didn't think it was possible to mess up cottage cheese, for example, but their was salty.  :-p

Jeff is going to laugh if I decide to try buying it.  : )
