Horticulture Question!

I ate an apple today for the first time in forever (they make my mouth itch!), and as I was finnishing it, I noticed that one of the seeds was sprouted! This was my first experience with this ever since every apple I have ever bought was non organic (bearing in mind that it prob amounts to like 10 over my lifetime)

After a huge swelling of pride at the visual proof that I was eating real, live food, I decided that it would be such a waste to throw it out. So my question is, can I plant this thing and let it grow? Or, I mean I know I can plant it but what's the best way?

I know that apple trees do get quite big, but that doesn't happen for years right? I mean, I can keep it in a container for a year or so? I don't want fruit, I just wanna see what the next step is in the evolution of this little seed. I'd feel like I was killing it if I just threw it out :(.

TIA!

Re: Horticulture Question!

  • I'm planning to plant some and I was told if you start them in the winter to put them in a planter and then transplant in the spring.  Being in Houston, I think frosts aren't very common (when I lived near Victoria Tx. I don't think we ever had a frost) so you are fine leaving it in the ground - just might want to put up barrier type things to keep it from being attacked by animals.

Or if you don't want fruit, you can probably leave it in a container for a while and just put it outside.  It will grow quite a bit the first year vertically, although most apple trees don't get extremely tall anyway.

  • Well, it's certainly POSSIBLE that it COULD grow. You could start it indoors as you would any other seed in a seed tray and transplant it- if you plant it right straight into the ground as a seed, it probably won't work.

FWIW, it takes apples trees at least 5-7 years before they bear fruit (I know you said you weren't interested in fruit though)- also, you will need another tree to crosspollinate this tree- apples are not self-pollinating.

  • Just so you know, them making your mouth itch means you are allergic to them, and allergies can worsen over time -- gradually or suddenly -- in this case, from itchy mouth to anaphylaxis.  It's not necessarily what will happen, but it's possible; i think you were making the right choice by avoiding them.

    Good luck growing your seed!

Thanks for the heads up! Yeah, I decided to do a search on it and found some articles on the topic. I don't know if I'll never eat apple again, but even the occassions where it doesn't itch, I simply haven't ever enjoyed their flavor (outside of Honey Crisps, those things are amazing! which at $2.50 a piece, I would hope so!)
