Do you tip the housekeeping staff at hotels?

I'm checking out of my hotel in Rome in the morning and thinking that after 7 nights of being well-taken-care-of, I should tip the housekeeping staff.  I've heard conflicting reports of whether or not to do it, but after 7 nights it may be warranted.  Not that I've been a slob, but they've been pretty good to me.  Any thoughts?  TIA!

Re: Do you tip the housekeeping staff at hotels?

  • I ALWAYS do :)  Just a couple bucks is fine.

  • We do as well, usually $1 per day.  I have no idea if this is on par or not though :)  When I traveled with my parents as a kid they would leave a lump sum at the end, several dollars or so IIRC, depending on the length of our stay.  However I heard that you do not usually get the same housekeeper every day so you should probably tip per day, this is what I've heard anyway, not sure if it's valid.

Amy, have a safe trip home! xoxo

  • We tip for extended stays (3+ nights), at least $2 per day.  We'll leave more if we've made a particular mess, like if I spill something, or if the hotel is v. upscale.

Some hotels add a housekeeping gratuity to the bill on checkout, so be sure your hotel isn't doing that.  If they do, ask them to remove it from the bill if you already tipped the staff on your own.

  • We always do, $5 a day.  Just a random amount my husband likes to leave.

I bet you're excited to come home and see the hubby!  Safe travels.

  • DEFINITELY TIP!!!  Housekeepers are ALWAYS under-appreciated.  Think about it, we tip 15-20% for food servers, but what about the people that clean up after us (fix the bed, clean the bathroom/toilets)  We always tip $5/day as a base.

I hope you had a wonderful time.  I've never been to Europe, but one day... a girl can dream, right?  :)

  • Yup, usually anywhere from $3-$20, depending on how long the stay and how expensive the hotel was.

  • I always tip $1-2/day...depends upon the size of the room (1 bed or 2, suite, etc.) the number of us staying in there (me only?  me & DH?  more?) and their level of service.
  • We always leave something when we check out.  The amount depends on how long we've been there.

this. unless there is already a service charge on the bill, then we don't.  i've also heard that you should find out if you have the same maid everyday so that one lucky maid doesn't get all the tip if you have a different one every day ;)

Yes  Same here. (Well, when we're in the States anyway, since they don't really tip here.)

  • Thanks ladies!  I felt like I should this time around.  I'm checking out now and will be sure to leave something!
