I need an assignment.

I'm in a creative rut. Everything in this town's been photographed a gazillion times in a gazillion ways, and it's hard to come up with something new & interesting. Right now my to-shoot list consists of: interesting shadows, reflections, architecture, and the city at night. None of those things will be happening today, obviously. Unfortunately.

I'm still hoping and crossing crossables that we might be here for the very start of the cherry blossoms. But I'm not holding my breath.

Re: I need an assignment.

  • I think you should do a statue photographic tour of Central Park. I know lots of them have been photographed but I'm not convinced that all of them have.
  • Central Park, NYC? I'm talking DC (for the moment).

(Side-note: H and I were going to come up to NYC for the weekend, but he died when he saw hotel prices. Looks like it'll be a day trip if we ever get up there.)

  • I think you should do a photographic study of our favorite WWers.  Wade through the snow to the Spy Museum to pick up some tips.  Then you can stalk Hmo and WW the rest of this week.  Next week take the train up to NY and follow TT with your camera on her way to work, WZ walking the dog, etc.

  • The Korean War memorial would be something to shoot. It's all of those soliders, isn't it? Get a shot of each one?

  • Ha! I *do* have hmo's address... ;)

  • I just realized, if you DO end up coming to NY, i have an empty apartment (in the suburbs) you can stay in.

with an air mattress, though. but dogs are welcomed, and it's free!

anyway. take pics of Toby in various stages of undress in the snow, as if he's caught without pants, smoking a cigar, throwing a snowball, etc.

also, take pics of people from your hotel window into theirs.

  • That's on my list, TT. I walked right past it the other day and wanted to kick myself for missing it. And I'm dying to get out to Arlington and the Tomb of the Unknowns (pun not intended).
  • Careful Zilla, we just might take you up on that.

And sadly, there will be no Toby pics. He's with MIL while we're here. I miss his stinky little face, too.

  • Take pictures of things people don't normally see in DC, the real life stuff.  I love those voyeristic (I think I just made that word up) type of shots.

  • Were you checking NYC hotel prices for Valentines weekend?  I think those are probably going to be higher.  I just checked hotwire for the weekend after V-Day and prices are about half of what they are for V-Day (lots of 3.5 - 4 stars for $120-150).

  • You can snuggle with FatCat. he's kind of stinky (in a cat spit way) and he's as big as a dog.

If you look a hotwire or travelocity for any other weekend than V-day weekend it should be fairly reasonable. And you can always argue with DH about the fact that it will be so much cheaper to visit NYC for a weekend now when it's just a train ride as opposed to when you move to the west coast and it's the cost of a plane ticket and MORE days in the hotel.

  • just give me notice to get the mattress filled with air (or pudding), and it's on.

like i said, it's a suburb, but it's a 10 minute walk to the metro north, and there are a ton of restaurants and activities locally.

there is no TV, though. it'd be like a really crappy bed and breakfast. you have a private bathroom, but no breakfast.

  • I think all the white buildings/monuments covered in snow would be nice. It snows so seldom down there (and never this much) that those would be much more unique shots.

Also, people watching is generally awesome in the city. Wait for a slightly warmer weekend and head to the mall. There is always some kind of protest or rally at the Lincoln Memorial, and then there are the tourists in general.

As far as off the beaten path places...the houses in Georgetown, the C&O Canal, Eastern Market, Capitol Hill.

  • This is where the cabin fever would kill me.  Not having the OPTION to go out and do whatever would drive me nuts.

And at that point, I'd start dressing H up like the presidents and recreating the monuments in our house.  Toby would be a better subject, but you have to work with what you've got.  Or maybe you could work out 24/7?  ;)
