Ugh Chantix is not covered anymore!!

DH is quitting smoking. He's been on my insurance for years, but because he's eligible for insurance through his own job my insurance wanted to charge us an extra $600/yr to have him covered. Now that he's insured through his new employer we need to get his chantix refilled. I just called and it's not covered. It cost $150/month, vs $35 with my insurance. I'm thankful we have a flex spending account, but this will eat through it in 3 months. :o(

Has anyone quit using Chantix? How long did you need the medicine? DH has been on it for a month. He hasn't had a cigarette in 3 weeks. I'm so proud of him. Not stopping the momentum now!!

Re: Ugh Chantix is not covered anymore!!

  • DH is quitting with Nicorette.  Good luck to both of you and what a great move, health and financial! I didn't know how much the price of cigarettes have increased!
  • This may be a silly question, but is there a generic form of the drug? If not, and it's really helping him, maybe it's worth it to keep him on your insurance. Otherwise, he'd pay that $600 in just 4 months anyway. Best wishes to him..how great that he's quitting!

  • I about had a heart attack when I bought him a pack of cigarettes last month for more than $6/pk. CRAZY! He was spending about $35/wk on cigarettes. So chantix and smoking cost about the same each month...but I think he'll be off chantix in another month or so.
  • he can call 1-877-yes-quit and get free telephone counseling and a 2 month supply of the patch for free.
  • My mom has quit 3 (maybe 4?) times with Chantix.

DH quit cold turkey.  He hasn't smoked since New Years.  Freakin' amazing, I have no idea how he's doing it.

  • Has he tried Welbutrin?  Also, can he see if there are any coupons on the drug manufacturers site?  DH thinks that there should be to help offset the cost plus it should be outweighed by what he would spend smoking.

    GL!
