Teachers, please come in...
My brother recently graduated and is entering the teaching field. I don't have any family or friends that are teachers to ask so can you tell me when school districts begin posting jobs and accepting applications? If you know of any good districts that you'd recommend that will be hiring, that info would be appreciated too! TIA
Re: Teachers, please come in...
This. I got my job the week before school started so definitely tell him to not lose hope if he doesn't get a position this spring.
I got my job while the teacher development days were going on 3 days before school started. There are even some districts (well here in South Texas) who are still hiring for RIGHT NOW.
I wouldn't worry too much.
in my district, we have to submit our intent for next year around the end of march. after the principals figure out who is staying, who is going, and who wants to transfer, they have a big principal meeting to try and accomodate the transfers first and fill from within the district. afterwards, they know what positions they're still going to need filled and start asking for applications.
applications are made to our central office where potential hires are interviewed by an elementary and/or a secondary pre-interview person. if you do well there, then your application will be passed on to principals when they ask. for example, if you're wanting 4th or 5th grade and make it through the first round, your application might be sent to a principal who needs to hire 4th and/or 5th grade teachers.
so our principals start looking around mid-april, but teachers have been hired the day school opens, too. sometimes, class size numbers are bigger than expected and a teacher is needed at the last minute. this is especially true in the lower grades where there is a cap on the number of kids that can be in a class (ex. max of 22 in a kinder class).
here's the link to our district's recruiting schedule. it's a great district, and i would recommend working here.

here's the link to the region's job fair, which is supposed to have around 35 districts represented and recruiting, although i would be applying sooner than that (the job fair's in june):

sorry, i have more to say!
as far as which districts to apply to, do you know where he wants to live? if you go to this webpage and roll your mouse over the counties, it will give you a general idea of which districts are where. (for example, though, leander isd is in williamson and travis counties, but the map only says williamson.)
