dog food question

i posted this on the pets board, but thought i would here as well. :)

our little boston terrier has some tummy issues and after ruling out a lot of things via blood work, the vet recommended putting him on food with limited ingredients. (he was on blue buffalo and then nutro).

does anyone have any recs for limited ingredient dog food? we would prefer dry if possible, and cost really doesn't matter too much as he is a little guy so a big bag lasts a while.

tia!

Re: dog food question

  • We give Rolo the Avoderm Dry Dog Food... in the Baked Lamb and Avacado.  His foster mom gave him that originally because of his sensitive belly and allergies... so we just stuck with it.  It is one of the more pricer dry dog foods at Petsmart, but worth it.  Smile
  • We feed our gal Wellness simple lamb. She gets terrible tummy issues on most everything else.

you can also sign up for coupons from the wellness site and they usually come monthly.

  • I got an email from Blue Buffalo yesterday saying they are coming out with limited ingredient foods.  There is a fish version for dogs with normal protein sensitivities.  Something to consider!
No siggy pic until TB gets rid of Twitter and FB links Daisypath Happy Birthday tickers

  • California Natural Lamb is what RC is on.  They have other varieties, but he's allergic to poultry and corn.

    Here's the ingredient list:
Lamb Meal, Brown Rice, Rice, Sunflower Oil

Healthwise is the generic verision of it if you want a cheaper option.

    BabyFruit Ticker
  • We also use the California Natural Lamb and our dog has never had any kind of stomach problems.

  • We buy ours from Tomlinson.  They're really knowledgeable there and I believe the brand we get is Nature's Balance but if you ask them they'll direct you to a good affordable food.  I have a discount card there so email me and I'm happy to give you my cell number so you can use it for the discount (otherwise it's $5 a year or something).
  • My dog is on California natural as well and he has a ton of allergies.
  • Our Yorkshire Terrier has had pancreatitis twice, so we have to deal with a very sensitive tummy.  He is on Royal Canine-Venison and Potato.  It is a prescription diet.  GOOD LUCK!  Tummy issues can be expensive!

Our beagle is on Royal Canine - Venison and Potato too.  It's the only thing that didn't leave yucky 'results' in the grass.  He going bananas for it too.  Freaks out when we get close to the tub where it's held because he *hearts* his food so much.

  • Our Pom is on Nature's Balance, Sweet Potato and Fish (they have a few other flavors as well).  Nature's Balance is suppose to be a really good brand for dogs with allergies, which is why I bought it.  About 7 months ago our dog was having stomach issues and I thought it was allergies.  It wasn't, but I kept him on it because he loves it!  We buy it at PetCo.

  • Just throwing it out there.  We feed our dogs the Costco brand lamb and rice diet.  I did a ton or research a few years back on dog foods, and this one ranks up there with the VERY expensive dog foods sold at specialty pet stores.  As you can see below, that would put us in the poor house quickly, but I was willing to pay $80 for a 40 lb. bag of food if it would be beneficial to them, but the very cheap (I think it's less than $30 a bag) Kirkland brand has very few fillers, etc.  Their coats look a million times better than when they were on Iams.  As it has few fillers, it's, um, stinkier for us, but I guess that comes along with the territory!
