my dog killed a possum last night :(
Indy caught a possum yesterday evening. We heard some squealing and Ben went out to see what it was and there was Indy shaking it like crazy. Ben got him to drop it and it ran up a tree, but it was dead this morning.
I feel kind of bad about it...I mean, possums are hardly endangered in our area (they're actually pests) and I know there wasn?t anything we could have done ? it?s not like our dogs were roaming the neighbourhood and killing little animals, they were locked securely in our own yard ? but it?s still kind of disturbing to be reminded that my sweet little BooBoo can do stuff like that, you know? *sniff*
Re: my dog killed a possum last night :(
LOL, this is too funny!!
Lisa, I think I'd feel a little bad about the poor possum but eh, being a herding/hunting dog, I don't think Indy could have helped it. Our friend who has an Australian cattle dog had a little incident with the local humane society after their dog tried 'herding' a runner and kinda sorta nipped a little at the person. The poor dog wasn't intending to hurt the person at all but got into a bit of trouble over the whole thing because his natural instinct kicked in at the wrong time. I'm sure your BooBoo is a sweetheart, just like our friend's dog.
I agree w/Lisa... it's just their nature. I wouldn't feel too bad about it, really.
people always think it's so cute how their dogs will take a stuffed animal and shake it around but often they don't realize that it's just their dog instinct trying to "kill" the stuffed animal!

Oh no! A few months ago I went onto my back porch and there was a dead little bird. I realized that there was a nest in the overhang that's above my grill and I must have smoked out the birds when I was cooking dinner the night before. Worst part about it? I was cooking chicken
I felt awful.

Oh I know it's natural...it just made me kind of sad.
Also, I can't stop laughing at this:
I was gonna say, am I a bad person if this makes me giggle? But if Lisa in Oz is laughing too, it's okay.
If you saw my pics on FB about my hunting dogs, you'd know I had the similar event happen to me, except I saw it happening. My Bosley is the cutest thing and you wouldn't think that he has it in him to be a hunter. But he does tear up his stuffed animals and I have always said that he was on the kill. But a few months ago I didn't think he actually would kill. Our backyard is a mac nut farm and a stream and a bamboo forest, so a lot of mongeese leave around our property. Bosley found one and I thought it was a rat and he had it cornered then George decided to check it out....they are so lucky they didn't get bit cause their teeth are very long and sharp. The two dogs tag teamed and Bosley caught it, shook it to death and then dropped it. He didn't want to eat it or tear it apart thank God but his hunting instincts kicked in. I didn't scold him, because he was in a sense protecting us from the rodent, I had just had my surgery on my foot so I couldn't run over to them, but I was yelling trying to get him to stop, but he was focused on capturing it. Anyhoo, that's my story and I will never forget the day my cute Bosley turned into a hunter.
Ooooh they're lucky they didn't get bitten! Like you said, mongeese have really sharp teeth. I'm actually relieved Indy didn't get bitten by the possum either - they look kinda cute (in an ugly way lol) but they have very sharp claws and teeth and it definitely could have done some damage if it had been facing the right way.
be careful, mac nuts will make your dogs sick! not sure if they show any interest in them, but just thought i'd tell you

hi hi hi
i hate possums. i hate them. i used to see them on campus. and i would run away! hahah they look like big ugly rats. the very first time my sister saw one, it was in my folks' backyard and she screamed. then she started to throw things at it to make is go away. it just stood there looking at her like "what?" to which i explained, "you know, playing possum?" hahaha
funny.
so i feel bad for your dog... but at the same time, i hate possums. hahahah i'm mean and the animal groups will hate me forever. hahaha
ps i read the subject of this posting, but never posted a reply, but the night you posted, i had a dream where i bought a house and a possum was stuck inside a mesh wire wall thingy. hahaha you're infiltrating my dreams lisa!
