Question about Peonies

I live in TN and I planted some peony bulbs last year but they never came up.  It may be because I planted them end of April first of May.  Do you think they will come up this year?  I am new to gardenng and I am still trying to figure things out;)

Re: Question about Peonies

  • they should be planted in the fall. When you planted the root did you make sure to plant them with the eyes facing upward?

Did you amend the soil? The soil in middle tennessee is pretty heavy clay and so a lot of bulbs, tubars, etc will rot in the ground unless you amend the soil.

  • I'm sorry I am new to gardening and am not sure what amend the soil means.  I will try to go online and reserch it.  Yes I did plant the bulbs with the eyes facing forward.  I bought the bulbs from either Home Depot or Lowes and planted them according to the directions on the package.  I am just not sure if I should dig them up and start over and buy the starter plant instead or if I should let them be....

  • with the clay soil you should add some sand and compost so that it isn't clay. that is amending the soil.
  • I would say add compost to clay soil, but don't add sand to clay. Adding sand to clay soil makes for concrete soil! That's not good for any gardener.

Pick up a clump of dirt. Does it fall through your fingers, or is it a hard lump? (Well, it might be frozen now, so you might have to wait until it thaws first.) If it crumbles, you're ok. If it is a hard, muddy, squishy, lump, it's probably clay and needs some compost added to it.

  • Possible soil problems aside, they definitely didn't come up because of when you planted them. If you wanted them to come up last Spring you needed to plant them the previous Fall, just as with any bulb.

  • In our area, peonies prefer a more acidic soil. We have garden soil that I mix in with my regular soil that adds some of that to it, or my garden centers have a powder that I can mix in with my soil.

I planted peonies 2 years ago, not bulbs but an actual established plant and I didn't get anything from them that year, but last year they came up and I got 1 flower on each of them. I'm hoping this year I can get 2 flowers from each and just build on them from there. I was a bit disappointed that the flowers don't stay for very long. I have them in between my rhodies and they do the same thing. Bloom beautiful then are gone within a week or so. But they sure are pretty when they are here.
