***Kirsten-Agent****

just saw your post in my homebirth thread....

No blog yet and yes my food blog has been horribly neglected since I got pregnant and had such bad morning sickness.

My hope is to get it back up and running soon-ish, but don't hold your breath.

Ask me anything about the CDing you want!

I want to CD too when we have a LO! Do you love the ones you use? What brand are they? Are they one size fits all? Are they easy to handle? What about with traveling?( and I know you probalby haven't done this yet) lol

  • Yeah I figured the blog went to the way side when you were PG.

I dont know what to really ask about CDing, Im just realllly interested in it. Like how much easier/harder it is. Cost. That type of stuff ;)

Stacy- we didn't go with the one size (OS) diapers, mostly because they don't fit super small babies and they don't always go up to potty learning.

Also, most OS especially All in Ones (AIO's) have synthetic fibers which seem to me to have more issues as far as detergent buildup etc.

So we decided to go with sized fitteds.

For the NB stage I bought Kissaluvs Size 0 (KL0's) and some NB Swaddlebees fitteds and 2 nana's botoms.

I LOVE the KL0's, they contain everything , I've not had a blow out in them nor a leak. Though there was one time the cover wasn't all the way around the diaper so her pants got a little damp, but that was user error nothing with the diapers.

The swaddlebees are great as well but they already almost don't fit her! And she's only 9 lbs. So I think they'd be great for teeny babies but if you have a normal/large sized babies you might be out of luck.

I hate the nana's bottoms. I prefer snaps, those are velcro and although they were NB diaps they didn't go below her belly button so I wouldn't put them on her much, too much irritation.

We also bought the thirsties covers which are great. The duo's are 2 sizes in one and we also got some x-smalls and one small sized. They have leg gussets so they contain everything!

We have Mother Ease Sandies for the next size up but I haven't used them yet. I'll let you know though.

We will also likely buy some AIO's for the church nursery and when others watch her since people think that it's so hard to CD but it really isn't!

Yes, I think they are easy to handle, I have a wet/dry bag that I keep by our changing stuff and one that goes in the diaper bag ( that is smaller and holds 5-7 diapers and has a dry pocket for clean diapers).

Right now I wash every day because I didn't stock up on a bunch of NB diaps since they grow out of them so quickly.

Since BF poop is water soluble I don't rinse them ( this will change when she starts some solids later on, most moms don't rinse them either some do, we did for a day or 2 and realized it didn't matter). So I put them on the soak/gentle cycle/rinse first in cold water, then Hot wash with the cloth diaper detergent we have and then sometimes an extra cold rinse.

Then I throw them all in the dryer with a dry towel (so they dry faster) and that's it! i'll likely hang them on the line when I am using the bigger stash.

I haven't traveled with them yet, but it shouldn't be too bad our large wet/dry bag holds up to 18 diapers I believe, which is why I bought it so it could travel. You just throw the bag right in the wash with the diapers when you need it and either hang it to dry or throw it in the dryer.

One plus is she never stinks (BF poop doesn't smell) but when she was in sposies (for 3 days at the beginning, and 2 sunday's when I didn't do the wash) she smelled because of the chemicals reacting to the pee/poop. SO GROSS. But that is just my opinion.

Also when she had a sposie on and was nursing she peed through the side, on me! I was so angry and turned to Clayton and told him how much I love cloth diapers and HATE sposies, he thought it was funny, me not so much.

So there is my NOVEL (sorry) on CD's I'd be more than happy to answer any questions I can!

Kirsten- I don't think it's harder, it only takes me a minute or 2 more to change a CD as it does to change a sposie. And if you went with an All in One they are just like a sposie as far as you don't need a cover and they usually have velcro ( though you can get them with snaps) and they have the absorbant layer and the waterproof layer in one.

Obviously you have the laundry issue, but really it's not difficult you just have to do it.

Cost- depends what you go with, prefolds and covers are the cheapest, then you have fitteds and covers (which I use) which retail 10-18 a piece for a diaper and $10-13 for a cover.

Pockets, which I didn't want to do because you have to stuff/unstuff them and  I dont' want to have to touch dirty diaps more than I have to. Also have the cover on the diaper so you dont' have to put one on. They retail $15-25 roughly

AIO's have everything all together and they retail $20-30ish so they can be expensive and they take a long time to dry since everything is in there together so it is thick.

Then you have your one size pockets/AIO's/ or fitteds- may not fit your small baby or your toddler but then you are only buying so many diapers  and using them all the time because they are one size. Price depends on what type you are buying.

I've probably spent $200-250 so far but I got most of mine slightly used or at a discount. Most people spend about $500 on a stash, but with how expensive sposies are you would go through that easily in 6-8 mo

Let me know if you have any other questions

  • Wow, thanks so much, Christina!

I will, of course, be hitting you up once we get pregnant so I can ask more questions...there are SO many different brands/types of CD's it's a little overwhelming!

  • I just started to CD, I'm a fan so far! :)

  • WoW! Thanks for all the info!

You need to have a baby blog so I can lurk and learn :)

    Thanks for sharing!

  • I'm jumping in here (hey Kirstin!!), forgive me!

We use the BG 3.0 OS Organics (velcro) and we love them! I just wish we had a few more.

I find that it literally takes NO more time to change them compared to a sposie, and wash really isn't that big of a deal. We have the SRP time of use plan, which is killing me. I would like to do a load every three days (and we have more than enough diapers to make that happen) but the way the electricity is timed out for winter, I can't start any laundry until 9 pm. The dipes need a cold wash followed by a hot one, then an hour in the dryer. There is no way I am starting this at 9pm! So, we usually end up washing on the weekends. Which means we use our last cd and wash them all!

I still use sposies for night time. With the organic cotton Wyatt will feel wetter faster than a if he was in a sposie (even though it is just as absorbent, its the chemicals in the sposie that keep babies bottoms "dry") and I don't want him sitting in the damp cotton all night.

So far we haven't had a blow out (in a CD) and the leaks were all user error; not tight enough (DH), dipe on backwards (lol, new daycare teacher), dipe sized wrong (that one was me, not paying attention). They are one of the "bulkier" options, since the insert is built in, but we haven't had any trouble with fitting them into his clothes. We did have to wait a little while because his tush was too tiny for them, but he was big enough by 8 weeks. I actually liked using the sposies in the beginning. With all the meconium (yuck!) I didn't want to risk ruining them before we really got a chance to use them, and my little man was pooping like every ten minutes (not really, but it certainly felt that way!) plus we had enough adjustments to make without adding all the laundry to the mix!
