XP: What to put in Centerpiece that is Kid Friendly?

I am having a first birthday party that is Cupcake themed.  I have found an adorable scented cupcake candle that fits in perfectly. I have a large clear round centerpiece vase left over from my wedding that I can put it in.  My question is what to put around the candle?

All I can think of is jelly beans, but I don't want kids reaching in for candy, even though the candle won't be lit.

This picture was the best I could find online, though nuts really don't go with my theme either.  And starfish and sand won't work this time around. TIA!

{{Safety Disclaimer: In all honesty, I am most likely going to light it prior to guests arriving so that the room is fragrant and then put it out so that I don't need to worry.}}
