when people you don't know/don't know very well use pet-names for you?
Things like sweetheart and sugar?
Normally I'm not bothered by this, unless it's a man using it. I'm fine with strange women using it, or FI using it, or my Dad using it, but even male friends are not allowed to call me sweetheart, sugar, or sexy.
Some guy just called me sweetheart 3 times in the course of a 5 minute conversation. It made my skin crawl.
Re: Does it bother you
This is something I have to get used to in da Souf. It irks me, but it's whatever. I know they don't mean it that way.

Sexy is never an appropriate thing to call a person that you just met.
I've heard sweetheart, sugar and darlin'. Southerners think it's charming or normal IF it is an older gentlemen.
A lot of young guys tend to say it and it's usually not a genuine thing. And overuse it in a 5 minute convo.
It's weird. I'd be bothered. I think to get away with it, only once and 70+ age is necessary.
My new boss is this way. He calls me sweetie @ the end of a conversation and shortens my name to Ames. This was all okay. Then, he popped out with "baby cakes". I looked at him horrified like and said, You simply can't call me that. He hasn't since.
At least he didn't say sweet cheeks
Only when it comes w/ a heaping dose of condescention.
There are 2 male students who get the stink-eye from me for it.
It doesn't bother me when strange women, or anybody familiar calls me this. Boss calls me sweetie/sweetheart randomly, esp. if he's been talking to his daughter a lot, and I'm not bothered by it in the least.
But strange dude who I clearly remember having a tempertantrum the first time I met (at a restaurant) calling me sweetheart repeatedly? Not ok.
Also: I don't have an issue with old men calling me names like this, just young men.
And I have two friends I've had to have a talk with about the names they come up with for me. Sexy is not ok. I appreciate it, I'm flattered, but I'm not sleeping with you, so please to stop. kthx.
