Greetings Kentucky Nesties from an Ohio Nestie!
My sis and I are planning a visit to the Lexington area in the spring and I'd love to get some recommendations from locals. We enjoy doing outdoor activities (hiking, biking, kayaking, etc) in the morning and seeing attractions, shopping and wine tasting in the afternoon. We like to eat whatever is local so if there is a famous dish (I've heard of 'hot browns' but don't know what that is) or a local place, we'd love to visit and try out the local fare.
So far, some of the activities we're considering are visiting the Red River Gorge, hitting a couple bourbon distilleries, visiting a horse farm or track, driving to Berea for some shopping and gallery hopping. Any other advice, tips or suggestions are appreciated! TIA!
Re: Please share Lexington Area travel recs!
Hi! I am fairly new to Lexington, so others may have better suggestions, but here are mine:
- If you're here in April, check out Keeneland for some horse racing.
- Ramsey's is a popular local spot for lunch or dinner -- and I think they offer hot browns. Cheapside downtown is another fun place for dinner and drinks.
- I haven't been, but my husband has gone to Jean Farris Winery for dinner and says it's great. Talon Winery has Wine Down Fridays...which is definitely something I'll be checking out when the weather improves.
- Everyone I have met here has told me to go to the Red River Gorge, so if you're outdoorsy, I would second that suggestion.
Have a good trip!

I know I'm late, but... Check out Joe Bologna's downtown. It's a local pizza/pasta place that has been around forever. It's very casual - good for lunch or dinner.
Have fun!
I used to live in Lexington & miss it so much! I would definitely 2nd the Merrick Inn rec, it is FAB! Also, DeSha's downtown is the place I always took people. They have great food & a bourbon bar next door if there is a wait. I used to go to Ramsey's too & would rec that for breakfast. Keeneland is a gorgeous track, do that if the timing works. I would also recommend Talon Winery & Woodford Reserve like the pp. Woodford is in Versailles & (for me) was a little rough to get to the first time but just make sure you use Mapquest/Google Maps & don't completely rely on your gps & you should be fine. All other distilleries pale in comparison to Woodford so you should def check it out. Have fun!!
