what else to have as app/snack before cake?

Saturday am having a very small group of friends and their kiddos join us to celebrate our sons 2nd birthday.  We're doing it at the local YMCA..renting the playstation room for running around and playing for an hour, then a room for gathering for an hour to open gifts, have cake...visit.  We're ordering a birthday cake but thought maybe should have something else light to have with cake or before serving cake? Maybe a fruit tray or crackers...mixed nuts? i dont know....age range is 2-7 and then small group of adults....any suggestions would be great as i'm just kinda stumped right now what to do.  Thanks.

Truthfully I think it's fine to just offer cake.  A fruit tray and crackers sound nice, but I don't think they're necessary.

Some simple options that I'd consider are:
- mixed nuts
- potato chips & dip
- tortilla chips & salsa
- cheese & crackers
- veggies & dip
- pretzels/popcorn
- fruit tray (though, you've got "sweet" covered with the cake)

What time of day is it? If it's at meal time I think you need some food....pizza maybe? If not then the above suggestions sound perfect.

I'd have a few snacks for while he's opening gifts: chex mix, goldfish, peanut butter dip with apples and celery, nuts and m&m's.  It doesn't have to be fancy, but I'd probably have a few bowls of snacks around.
