car paint question

Have any of you had a car that started to get rust on it?  What does it look like when it first starts to rust?

I have some weird looking whitish spots on the hood of my jeep.  They don't come off but they don't really look like the clearcoat is coming up.  They kind of look like bird crap.  My stepdad thinks it's starting to rust but would it be white?  What else could it be?

Re: car paint question

  • Ya know, I have those.  I don't know what they are either, but I don't think it's rust.

I drove my Camry almost until it disintegrated. The rust started on the bottom rim of my car (where road salt would get to it), first turning darker, then peeling.

  • Have you ever asked a body shop or anything about them?

I'm glad someone else thinks it's not rust but I still don't want it there.

Nope. I'm not one to spend money on a car if it's still able to safely get me from point A to point B. I think, however, that if I did bring it in to a body shop, they would have some great insight.

  • I'm going to ask when I take it back to get the new cruise control part put in but everything has been closed here lately from the snow so I don't have anyone to ask.
  • Did you notice the problem before the snow?
  • It definitely wasn't there before the last big snow.  There was about a foot of snow on top of the jeep and I pushed a bunch of it off then let the rest melt.  When it melted those spots were on it.

At first I thought it was built up salt from the roads but like I said, it doesn't come off.

I'm leaving work now so I might not answer right away but thanks for your help!

No problem!  Let me know if you find anything out!

  • I asked hubby and he said that it is not rust, it's the start of oxidation. In those areas, the clearcoat has diminished and the sun is starting to beat down on the paint beneath the clearcoat, causing the paint to fade.

Would that happen while it's covered with snow?  Like I said, the white spots weren't there before the snow and as soon as the snow was gone they were there.  I had a white car that the clearcoat started flaking on.  This doesn't look the same but then that paint was white.

  • sry this is so late! DH isnt here but he was talking about how the salt can react with the clearcoat and once the sun is beating down on it when it melts it can take the clearcoat away (hope i am saying this right...he said something about the salt and the sun doing it)

  • Well that really sucks.  I bet that's expensive to fix too.  I just bought it last month.
