Maybe I have selective amnesia, but these books weren't banned when I was a kid. Granted, when I was little "Helen Has Two Mommies" hadn't been written yet, but damn! I checked "The Color Purple" out of the library when I was 10 and no one blinked an eye.

Re: S/O Book banning
They were required reading when I was in middle/high school. I'm amazed that parents are all, "ZOMG, teh sechs!!!!!!eleventy11!!!!" when they aren't all up in arms over MTV, Bratz dolls, and velour sweatsuits with 'Hottie' splashed across the ass.
I remember when The Simpsons first aired and parents were upset over 'Eat my shorts.' We've graduated to far. far worse.

I read the hell out of all of Judy Blume's teen angst books! Are You There, God, Deenie, Tiger Eye, all of them. Your mom took it away?? Wow. My dad counted on those to help me through puberty.

I do understand wanting to KNOW what the kid is reading...knowing that I had just finished "the Red Pony" explained a MAJOR childhood crying jag and worry about my dog. (note to self, move it up higher on the bookcase when Beauford arrives--7 yo's should NOT read it).
But, yeah, you can't really STOP them--kids will do it regardless.. My parents DID make me stop bringing some home for baby sis--they said if she wanted to read things they didn't approve of (fantasy novels--they were on a 'zomgs, D&D will send them to hell' kick), she could...just like I could. She just had to be her own supplier.
