Teachers -- dress code question/poll

My school just "banned" athletic shoes for teachers excpet for PE teachers. (Some of us aren't happy since we sometimes wear sneakers on jean Fridays and/or when we have to take them to recess . . . not to mention walking them around and playing with them on the floor.)

It's not like a Pre-K or Elem teacher needs to wear heels -- that would be crazy for my job. (I am on the floor and doing all kinds of things)

Anyway, can you wear sneakers?

[Poll]

Re: Teachers -- dress code question/poll

  • We can wear any shoes we like except for flip flops.
  • We can wear anything too.  We can wear flip flops as long as they are "fashion" type and not ones that look like they were made only for the beach (if that makes sense).
  • We were able to wear anything also.
  • We can wear whatever we want.  Our principal just ask us to look presentable/professional.  Principals try to enforce dress codes all the time, but there are many things that legally can't be enforced because it goes against our contract.  I have a great principal and most of the teachers at my school don't mind doing what our principal ask because she does alot for us.  So we are pretty happy to do what she ask of us.

  • Thats funny because my school is encouraging us to wear closed toe athletic shoes since all of the students have to and we'd be "good role models".

What district do you work in? I'd mention it to the union. From what I was told they cannot be that restrictive and what if you have a leg/knee/foot problem?

  • I teach at a private school -- so no union for us. (But I love unions!)

Actually my twin sis works at the school as well and she has major foot problems and has to wear sneakers. (They are the only shoe that works and they are mediclaly necessary) She spoke with the powers that be and they said she was fine. (I think they want the no athletic rule in the handbook but aren't going to follow up and "write up" people who decide to wear them. We shall see.

  • We can wear anytihng that we want.  I would think it would be  hard for a principal to enforce this type of rule.  I mean, really, sneakers being out of dress code for an elementary teacher?  That seems reallly out of control.

  • lol, I've been waiting to answer this question, but I still don't know!  I do know that we're supposed to wear ONLY closed-toed shoes, but apparently that's not really enforced.

I only found out what our mascot is today - the Shooting Stars!  How lame is that?!?!  Smile
