Our house is FREEZING! Do any of you ladies have any recommendations on insullation? we have a crawl space and there is NOTHING under our hardwood floors except the sub floor. A friend of mine posted on FB tonight that she was thinking about the spray foam insullation and that sounded like the perfect fix for us. I googled Spray Foam but I am only finding one or two places that do installation, the rest is just suppliers. Any recommendations? Any experience with the spray foam? TIA!
Re: insullation
We need to do some serious insulation work too--my DH added some himself and looked into try to do the spray foam himself (did some cost comparison plus hes pretty handy around the house) but we never ended up making a decision before I got to the hospital...so its on hold now
but I will say that some of our friends got the spray insulation done to their house, then afterward had an energy efficiency evaluator person come w/ an infrared camera to show where the heat was escaping their house still and it made a HUGE difference and their house was pretty bad to begin w/ like you could feel a blowing draft lol
I will say that a word of caution my DH had was I guess some walls have fire stopper kind of things in them about halfway up (that way if a fire starts in the wall it stops it from catching the whole house on fire) and unless the company knows what they are doing they can end up only filling your walls half-way (it will fill and expand to the fire stopper thing then the top half of your wall (or bottom half depending on where they blow the insulation in from) will end up not getting insulated--this obviously can be avoided if the company does 2 holes one on top and one on bottom but its something to watch out for
Our friends actually found that this happened in their house after the energy evaluator came the walls varied in temperature by quite a bit (the bottom of the wall was emitting one temp the top a totally different one) they gave the efficiency report to the insulation company and they came back and fixed it by drilling in the top and filling it in but our friends would have been none the wiser had the energy efficiency evaluation not been done but it was good for them in a sense too because they knew that the foam insulation DID make a big difference in temp and was worth the money (plus I think the energy evaluation might have been tax deductible)
Skylling - Do you know who they used? I would like to compare companies to get the best price.
Thanks ladies!
We used them too when we replaced our furnace. We were really happy with them.
Here's some other temporary fixes that really do make a difference-
Put plastic over the windows. My dad started doing this and it really does make a difference.
Shut any doors that lead to outside areas (eg, our closet has our crawlspace so we keep that door shut) as well as our laundry room door... which leads to our garage.
