Green your Refrigerator Tips!

Save Energy with your Refrigerator!

Refrigerators account for about 20 percent of household electricity use. For maximum efficency, use a thermometer to set your refrigerator temperature as close to 37 degrees and your freezer as close to 3 degrees as possible. If your refrigerator has an energy saver switch, make sure it is turned on.

Cover food before you store it in the refrigerator. Uncovered food releases moisture which increases energy use.

Vacuum or clean your refrigerator condenser coils at least once a year. Make sure your refrigerator has space between it and the wall so air can circulate around the coils.

If your refrigerator is more than 12 years old, it's probably time to replace it with a new, energy efficient model and you may cut your food chilling costs by half. Check out www.recyclemyoldfridge.com for information on the best ways to dispose of your old refrigerator.

Re: Green your Refrigerator Tips!

  • Does anyone know what to do if your coils are covered? I assume dust doesn't get in there? I don't really think you could take off the whole back panel without a lot of effort.
