All the homeless people here. There are homeless folks in Iowa, but they live in shelters, or in tents near the river. Not on a steaming grate on a sidewalk, or on a cot outside an Au Bon Pain. And you very rarely get solicited for change or food.
Yesterday, H and I were eating lunch in a restaurant, and a big, menacing dude in a dirty black trenchcoat came right up to the window we were sitting at, pointed at me, and started shouting profanities. He had the craziest eyes I've ever seen. H told me not to worry about it and not to look him in the eye, but - I won't lie - it totally freaked me out. He walked away, then came back and did it again. I made H scour the block when we left to make sure he was gone.
It's so sad, but it's so in-your-face. I feel so sorry for these people.
Re: I'm still getting used to
You learn to ignore it after awhile. The screamers are mentally ill, and generally harmless.
You should move to SF. They literally pay people to be homeless there.
Crap...I Mean Crafts
Ww, jarring is a good word for it.
I was walking the other day and saw this... thing. A pile of cardboard, caution signs, police tape, felt moving blankets, and newspaper. I walked slowly past it to figure out what it was when it fvckin MOVED. I'm glad no one was around me to hear me go "ACK!" and about fall over myself to move away.
