XP: Nuvaring Slipping

I've been on it for about a year now, & I really do love it, but it doesn't always stay in place all the way up there. Lately (as in this last week especially) it's been slipping down to the point of almost coming out of me. I don't know what's so different lately, but it's making me crazy. I've put it back in TWICE today and it isn't even 1 o'clock.

Nuvaring users: how do you get yours in and do you ever have slipping down/out issues?

I used to want to be on Mirena (the 5 year implanted one), but my doc said he won't do it for anyone who doesn't plan on not having kids for at least 4-5 years, which isn't our plan.

Re: XP: Nuvaring Slipping

  • I would call your doctor.  My ring has NEVER slipped (except during sex and/or tampon removal) and if anything, the longer it is up there, the more secure it becomes.

I find it a tad tricky to get it in right in the beginning (with a new ring).  I use a dab of lube, fold it and twist it, and then insert.  Once it has been in for a day or two, I have no problem re-inserting because it is already folded (into more of an oval shape).

  • If it's slipping out, you plain don't have it in correctly (or you're loose as hell, but I'll assume the former).

How are you putting it in?  You can't just "get it in" and then leave it.......you really do need to push it up as high as it can go with your finger once you have it inserted.  Once mine is in, it "sits" on that ledge-like area, behind my pubic bone.......to take it out, I have to use my middle finger pretty much up to the knuckle and use my finger like a hook.  It's in there good, there's no way that it's just going to slide out on it's own.

The only time that mine comes out without me pulling it out is during sex, and that's because it sometimes sticks to DH's penis.

  • I think it's because I have trouble getting it far enough in. I have short fingers, so I think I'm going to try a different position and if that doesn't work - DH's help.

  • A tampon applicator might be helpful as well, to help push it up and into position.

  • Read your package insert. You should have one in every box and if you only get it 1 month at a time ask your pharmacy for one. You can check the website also. You'll find that it says it's not uncommon for the ring to expell in some women especially in those that don't have kids (same with Mirena). I had a problem using Nuvaring so I switched to Ortho Evra and love it.  Just food for thought.
  • My ring NEVER has slipped. This is TMI, but when I push it in I push it in as far as I can go, and it reaches this "ridge" where it seems to stay put. Are you pushing it in far enough?
  • My nuvaring has never slipped but i use a tampon applicator to insert it. squeeze the sides together and place in the end of applicator and then just do like a tampon to place it and it never comes out and only slips around a little during sex
  • I HAVE A METHOD. And it works great. And this is from someone who was almost ready to quit from constantly having to readjust and shove it back up. Lie on your back. Twist it over once to make an eight shape then fold it down. Try to maintain that shape as you insert the ring and put it as far up as it'll go. It'll start to come apart but usually not before you get it past that "ledge" everyone is talking about. Walla! It's inserted and should stay in place on that "shelf" now.
