tell me about composting!

hi! i'm interesting in learning more about composting. How does it work? what do you use it for? Do you make more compost than you need?

FWIW we live in a small townhouse, with a very small garden area.

Thanks!

Re: tell me about composting!

  • i got an old bin (similar to a trash can) and drilled holes all over it with my biggest drill bit.  i also have a kitchen scrap crock, and when it gets full of food waste, i dump it in the compost bin.  there's actually a lot of stuff you can compost, if you google for it you'll find long lists.  as long as you get the ratios of greens and browns right, it shouldn't stink.  it's pretty cool, my bin started full and as it cooked down it took up half the space it originally did.  i stir it around with a shovel every once in a while.  i haven't used it yet, but it's for the garden.  look on your city's website, they may have cheap or free bins for you if they have a composting program.
  • We use our compost in our garden. If you live in a colder climate, it will take a while to work (our first batch took about 6 months). If you need compost for this spring you may want to consider a worm composter.

Between composting and recycling we barely have a trash bag worth of trash so we were able to cut our trash service.

  • I have some info in my blog about our compost.
  • I have both, an outside garden compost and an inside worm bin.  The purpose of having the inside worm bin is for the winter when I can't get to my outside compost and ..... for the excriment.  I have mine set up so that they are raised, and the excriment falls through the screen.  I collect the bottom stuff, mix a bit with water and I have an awesome fertilizer!
