Re: Luger Dies In Final Olympics Practice

  • I just saw that on another board. So sad. Sad

  • It is sad. I am watching the Opening Ceremony and the Georgian delegation is walking in now.

  • It was really sad to see that, and I was very shocked that they aired the footage of the accident
  • I agree with the critics who say the ceremonies should have been delayed a day out of respect for that poor luger.  It was impossible to enjoy it last night.

hmm, I have not heard anyone mention that. So would you have the actual competitions go on as scheduled or would you start rearranging everything?

If the dead luger had been your husband, brother or son, maybe you would want the IOC to delay the games for 1 day? Not too much to ask for a dead athlete, eh?

Are you saying everything would just shift a day? That this evening would be the opening ceremony and nothing would start until tomorrow? Have you stopped to think what a logistical nightmare that would be? I think shifted a two week event by an entire day is asking quite a lot. Delaying the games does not bring him back. If I was a family member I am not sure I would gain much from them delaying things (I really can not say, I thankfully have not been in that position).

It is tragic that someone died. Maybe the could have found another time to do the opening ceremony and continue the events with minimal changes but that seems like it would be complex to reschedule.

I think they could have canceled luge competition if need be. Hopefully the changes they have implemented will be sufficient to prevent serious injury to anyone else.

  • It really was a tragic accident, I still can't belive they were airing the footage, I think that was in very poor taste.

At least tonight before they started the luge, they said they wouldn't air it again.

  • I agree with pp, delaying would not bring him back it was a tragic thing to happen, I think they should have thought more about airing the footage. I thought it was completely insensitive to air that, and apparently a photo of him in the air was on the front page of the sports section of our paper. I feel terrible for his family
