Does anyone grow spinach?

I'd like to grow spinach but I don't know if it will do well in zone 6 where I am with clay soil.  I couldn't find much by searching online.  Does anyone grow it?  Can it be grown inside if our conditions aren't ideal?

Re: Does anyone grow spinach?

  • I tried... I didn't get any. I have no problem growing lettuce but spinach is supposedly pretty hard to grow
  • I grew it in zone 5.

    You can amend your soil.

  • I have clay soil, and it does really well for me in zone 9b (though it only grows here in what passes for "winter").  It even self-sows!  It's one of the few veggies that does well for me every single time from seed.  I do have better luck with it in containers with potting soil (that's where it self-sowed), but it grows in the ground here too.

  • I've had great luck with spinach in containers. We started it from seeds inside, then moved it outdoors when it was warm enough.  Good luck!

  • I grow it in zone 7.  But my problem is that it bolts really quick as soon as it gets warm.  i have sandy loam and teh way I get a bumper crop is heavy mulching, shade and planting in the fall.
  • I second growing it in containers or a raised bed.  Mine did great from seed, but it went to seed as soon as it got hot.
