DH and I are (realitvely) new to St. Louis and have no local family or friends here. With our busy schedules and the cold dreary weather making us blue, I've decided to implement date night during the week. I have some ideas on what to do, but would love to have some suggestions...
What things around St. Louis would you recommend to do? Restaurants to try? Or, if you wanted to stay at home, what kinds of things (like cooking a meal together or playing a game) would you suggest?
Re: Fun Date Ideas?
Go to the City Museum on an evening. Awesome museum and they serve alcohol in the evenings (maybe just weekend evenings). During the nice weather I love going to the Boat House at Forest Park.
We are so boring in the winter. We stay in, watch movies and cook. Play the Wii sometimes. We do invite friends over and play different board games. Loaded Questions, Trivial Pursuit, Apples to Apples.
Summer is totally different! We go to lots of Cards games and hang out downtown. Wineries, the zoo, museums. The Landing and hit some casinos. St. Charles and walk around their downtown area. City Museum, Forest Park boathouse, Mo Botantical Gardens.
Welcome to the 'Lou!
We go to the Botanical Gardens and to Cards games a lot in the summer. In the winter we tend to go window shopping a lot and go to the REI store in Brentwood. We go hiking at Greensfelder (down highway 44, 6 Flags exit)when it's not so wet outside, and we've been working our way through the 30 in 30 program from StL Co. Parks (http://www.stlouisco.com/parks/30-30/30-30.htm)
We also do random dates like going to museums-most are free-and painting pottery at a couple of studios in town. We'll also go to the Loop (Delmar) and wander through some of the shops and people-watch.
Welcome to St. Louis. I am not sure which area you are living in. Let me know and I will be happy to recommend some resturants. Hubby and I love to go out to eat so we have tried a lot of places. My initial recommendations are :
Shoguns- japanese cooked right in front of you - you get dinner and a show!
Brio- great Italian (a little pricey)
Crown Candy- (day time only) awesome little deli down in the city. Not the best neighborhood but a really cool place for lunch on a weekend. It is always crowded
Date recommendations:
The Moolah Temple- movie theater with leather couches and chairs, has a great bar and you can take your drinks into the theater. They also have a bowling alley downstairs
Funnybone- comedy club in Westport Plaza during the week the ticket prices are lower and a lot of times you can get a free ticket to come back.
Concerts- we go to concerts at the Pagent in the Delmar Loop
City Museum- several people have mentioned this- wear long pants and bring knee pads!
Backstreet Jazz and Blues club- Also in Westport Plaza and located right next to the funny bone. They have live music and a great place to dance and hang out.
Casa Loma Ballroom- they have different styles of dancing during the week. Most of the time they will have free lessons for the first hour and then open it up for live music and dancing the rest of the evening.
I second all this, and add The Big Bang. It's a dueling pianos bar on the landing, and is a hoot! It gets very crowded though, so you have to get there early-ish. Or if you want one not as crowded, there's one in Fairview Heights, IL called Chubby Knuckles.
All of the above are great ideas. Wintertime: board games and the Wii (God Bless the Wii). Last minute dinner parties. Checking out a gourmet market and trying a new recipe together. Borders or Barnes and Noble--coffee and books and a nibble of chocolate. We stay in a lot. St. Louis winters suck, but if you're snuggled up in your toasty house with your favorite book/movie/person, it's all good.
Spring and summer are entirely different. We live in the city, so we go to Schlafly Bottleworks or the Atomic Cowboy for drinks and live music on their patios. Farmers' markets (especially Soulard) are great. Shows at the Pageant or the Touhill--smaller venues, lesser-known performers, really great shows). When we can't think of anything specific to do, we just wander around some of our favorite neighborhoods (the Hill, the Loop, South Grand, the Central West End), and will inevitably find a great meal, some unexpected shopping, and hopefully a wine bar with live music.
If you're ever looking for restaurant ideas, go to saucemagazine.com. You can do a restaurant search based on cuisine, location, whatever. And welcome to our fine city
