I do not understand this scoring! (Olympics)

Anyone else watching the pairs figure skating short program? The judges are being oddly generous to skaters who are falling on their asses. It's starting to bug me.

  • I don't understand why they're being tape delayed for the west coast! I could drive to Vancouver and watch the events and still get home to see them on TV. Where's the wisdom in that?

  • I do not claim to know anything about how the scoring works, but I do not get it either.

  • I'm sure some of it has to do with the degree of difficulty for the various components of the program. In other words, you can fall on a set of side-by-side triple jumps. But maybe the level of difficulty for your spins or your throw is still high enough to bump you ahead of someone with an easier overall program who didn't fall at all.

That said, I was really curious as to why the Canadians who fell were scored ahead of the other Canadians! Seemed strange, but this was the only thing I could come up with.

This. Everything is assigned a point and level value, including spins, lifts, spirals and footwork. It's not only about the jumps. From each base value a skater can earn + or - points for how well the move was executed. Unison of movement is also a factor in pairs and ice dance.
